<p>The School of Nursing and Public Health conducted an annual health day at the main campus in Windhoek. The clinic on campus was not operational, at this time. This service is much appreciated by students and staff. The Community Health Nursing lecturers and second year diploma students participated in the Health day. The services that were rendered included blood pressure; weight and height and body mass index; blood-glucose test; eye test; neck massage. Health education on HIV/AIDS and cancer prevention was given to those who took part. The health day targeted non-communicable diseases (NCD) in order to promote prevention strategies. NCD is a medical condition or disease that can be defined as non-infectious and non-transmissible among people. It is further described as chronic diseases which last for long periods of time and progress slowly. Sometimes, NCDs result in rapid deaths as seen in certain types of diseases such as autoimmune diseases, heart diseases, stroke, most cancers, asthma, diabetes, chronic kidney disease, osteoporosis, Alzheimer's disease, cataracts, and many more (World Health Organization (WHO).</p><p><strong>Aim:</strong> The health day was done to promote and to provide necessary information and to raise awareness to students and staff on their health and on how to prevent non –communicable diseases.</p><p><strong>Method:</strong> No actual research was done.</p><p><strong>Results:</strong> Data analysis was done based on the findings from the users of the service. The total number of the people who used the blood pressure service were 161. Of which 38 were found to have high blood pressure while 10 were found with low blood pressure and were advised to visit the hospital or clinic and 113 had normal blood pressure. Many people, who were detected with high blood pressure, or hypertension, had no idea of having it. The people who came for weight were 130 out of which 63 had normal weight, 32 were overweight, 16 were obese, and 15 were underweight. Health education was given on nutrition, specifically on balance diet. 20 people were found with high blood-glucose level ranging between 7-21.8 mml. Total number of people who attend eye test were 63 of which 4 had poor vision and were referred to eye clinic. Neck massage attracted many people, and they enjoyed it.</p><p><strong>Conclusion:</strong> The results of health day indicated the need of such services in order to detect abnormalities and to improve the knowledge and understanding of the community members on non-communicable diseases and how to prevent them.</p>
The objective of this study was to determine the views and perceptions of teachers and adolescent's on adolescent's pregnancy in school in Kavango Region, Namibia. A cross-sectional analytical study was conducted using mixed methods-quantitative approaches among 350 school learners (grade 6 to grade 12) and 150 school dropout adolescents (aged 12 to 19 years). For the qualitative approaches 15 school learners and 25 teachers went through an in-depth interview. In total a sample of 540 was utilized. The stratified random sampling techniques were used in the selections of the circuit and the schools. Structured questionnaires were used in face-to-face interviews, and in depth interviews were conducted among the key informants (teachers). Themes and subthemes were identified and discussed: Challenges for learners in grasping or understanding the concept on reproductive health towards; Poverty-early marriages, bribe from men. Identified cultural barriers on reduction of the prevalence of adolescent pregnancy, towards; Culture-uncomfortable and shy to talk about sex. The study found that the following aspects/factors: lack of parental supervision; poverty; lack of knowledge and communication skills to talk to their children regarding sex & contraceptives; parental irresponsibility; lack of sex education; were associated with adolescent pregnancy in Kavango region.
Although there are many 'health days' to promote important public health issues, many of which are supported by different institutions. Global public health campaigns offer great potential to raise awareness and understanding about health issues. There are many world days observed throughout the year related to specific health issues or conditions. The School of Public Health conducted yearly a health day in the beginning of March or April of each year. According to Clinicians handbook (1998) explains check -up as a clinical preventive services usually delivered by primary health care clinicians to persons with no signs and symptoms of illness as part of a routine health care process. This study focuses on the methodology utilized in the study of the socio-economic determinants of adolescent pregnancy in Katutura, Windhoek: Namibia. The following aspects were explained, processed and methods use to conduct the study, the framework of the study, the procedures in selecting the participants and setting of the interviews. The aim of this study was to collect detailed information to explore the socio-economic determinants of adolescent pregnancy in Katutura, Windhoek: Namibia. The clinical study was a descriptive, cross-sectional study of three months duration. Semi-structured interviews methods were utilized to collect the data. A random sampling method was use to select the participant e.g. every second pregnant adolescent was interviewed. The interviews were done on specific days, Mondays and Thursdays, which were the follow-up days for antenatal clinic. Study participants were selected from a population of pregnant women attending the Katutura antenatal clinic. Inclusion and exclusion criteria were adhered in the selection process. Study population was all pregnant women attending the Katutura antenatal clinic during the time of the study. The study sample of 150 pregnant adolescent were accepted into the study. Data analysis; mixed methods analysis was used to interpret the data. Based on some the findings of the study 89% of the pregnant adolescent falls between the ages 17-21 who visited the ante -natal clinic. The majority interviewed represents 65% of the highest-grade completed grade 8-10. The mean age of the first intercourse is 16.5 years.
