In recent years, studies on AHS (Advanced Highway Systems) are seen in, many fields. However, th.ere still remaim many problems when we try to realize the automfated driving, the goal of AHS. I n this paper, we discuss the problems of AHS and propose a n,ew "HIR (Human-Oriented Image Restructuring)" system. that aims to solve the problems of AHS. HIR is a human.-assisting system in which we in.tegrate an.d restructure im,ages to make them helpful. The striking poznt of the proposed system compared with the conven.tiona1 one is that it is human, not the mechanical curs, that recognizes the situation an.d controls the cur, and for that purpose, we just generate and show easy-to-understand images for human. The step is, integrate and restructure num.erous camera images from all driving environment, such as cars and roads, and non-image information like VICS (Vehicle Information and Communication Systems) information. Then pick out the most important information according to the situation and show it in the form of "image". W e also describe the examples of proposed driverassisting images in several situations to demonstrate that the integrated and restructured images are helpfi1. The aim of AHS, one of the most advanced systems in the ITS, is to reduce traffic accidents, enhance safety, improve transportation efficiency as well as reduce the operational work of drivers [If. AHS is a system that supports the safe driving by collecting information from roadside cameras, vehicle cameras and sensors, and communicating road-tovehicle and vehicle-to-vehicle. The functions of AHS are vehicle positioning recognition, obstacle avoidance, speed control, sheering control and so on. When we try to realize the automated driving, the goal of AHS, there are problems [2][3]. These include: 0 Difficulty of recognitionIt is difficult for machines to perceive things like humans. When we use camera image, questions arise as to camera resolution, dynamic range and change of brightness due to the weather; as a result, wrong recognition like mistaking the shadow for obstacles may happen.a Man-Machine InterfaceWhen we think of the automated driving, the machine might brake hard automatically when not necessary. When the machine controls itself with several kinds of information, wrong operation should not be done. But these problems do not seem to be solved completely only by mechanical technology.
