The increasing demand of the feed market for protein has necessitated the need to look for and use other sources of this nutrient. Cottonseed cake and palm kernel cakes are used extensively for supplementing ruminant rations to increase their productivity. The efficiency of sperm production, libido and quality of spermatozoa tend to remain uniform throughout the reproductive life of an animal but may be significantly altered by nutrition. The aim of this study was to assess the effects of graded levels of protein on semen characteristics, and serum testosterone profile in Yankasa rams. Fifteen rams aged between 18–24 months and weighing 15–25 kg with good body condition scores (3.5) were used in this study. They were divided into three treatment groups (A, B and C) according to the dietary protein level. Group A (n = 5) received 10 %, group B (n = 5) received 15 % while group C (n = 5) received 20 % combined crude protein of cotton seed and palm kernel cakes, respectively. Semen samples were collected weekly using battery-controlled electro ejaculator. Serum samples were harvested using a Pasteur pipette into serum vials and stored at −20 °C for analysis. These samples were from a representative animal in each group for determination of testosterone profiles using ELISA technique at weeks 1, 6 and 12. Data collected were expressed as means and standard error of the mean (± SEM). Significance of differences between treatments means were estimated at P ≤ 0.05 with Tukey-Kramer multiple comparison test of repeated measures analysis of variance (ANOVA). From this study, it was concluded that rams fed concentrate of 15 % crude protein using cotton seed and palm kernel cakes combined had improved semen characteristics in terms of semen concentration, motility, live sperm cells and morphology, but the crude protein levels had no effects on testosterone concentrations.

Combining two or more polymers as a blend is necessary rather than synthesizing new ones for the balance of polymer properties for end-use applications. This work introduces a sustainable polymer blend (matrix) for high-impact applications, as the accessibility and cost of production of these high-impact polymers keep souring. This was achieved by designing an experiment using design expert v10.0 to account for the number of experimental runs and optimise the polymer blend. Mechanical, dynamic mechanical, and temperature effects were considered on the blended polymer. Sixteen (16) experimental runs were generated with blend ratio as the independent variable and Impact Strength (IS) and Tensile Strength (TS) as the responses. The optimal blend ratio was obtained for wPP, PP and NR as 23, 30 and 47 % respectively. While, the optimum conditions for maximum impact and tensile strengths from the D.E was 241.62 J/m and 118.04 MPa respectively, with a desirability of 0.973. While the validated values obtained were 248.9 J/m; with errors of 2.93 % and 120.14 MPa; with an error of 1.75 % respectively. Thermogravimetry analysis revealed a single peak degradation for sp17, sp18, and sp19 (control samples) while multiple degradation peaks were observed for the blends. It was believed to be a result of different times for degradation of the individual components forming the polymer blend. Also, the Td onset started around 300 oC and the Td offset was around 500 oC for all tested samples. While, the Dynamic Mechanical Analysis (DMA) showed that there was an improvement in the Tg and damping factor for sp5 (109 oC, 0.171) as compared to sp17 and sp18 (81.1 oC, 0.089 and 104.3 oC, 0.061), but no improvement was recorded for storage and loss moduli. SEM micrographs showed a good surface morphology for the blend with optimal mechanical and thermal properties. The blend can be utilized for engineering applications, including matrices for body armour, helmets, car bumper, etc.

Key words:Camel, Heartwater, Trichurosis, whipworms, Ehrlichia ruminantium, Nigeria A 5 year old male camel was reported dead in an institutional farm, and a routine postmortem was conducted on it. Adult worms were found in the lumen of the large intestines and segments of all intestines were sent to the parasitology laboratory for helminth identification. Rectal contents were also sent to the laboratory for oocyst screening. Lung and brain samples were also sent to the parasitology laboratory based on history. The result from the parasitology laboratory confirmed a helminth infection known as trichurosis and heartwater infection was also confirmed from presence of purple colonies of Ehrlichia ruminantium on the endothelium of capillaries close to the nuclei. Although it was hard to establish which of the infections caused the death of the animal but it is noteworthy that this case confirms natural susceptibility of the camel to both diseases and is capable of causing mortality in camels.
