'ihe motivation for the study which I will describe this atternoon was the desire or necessity to make relatively accurate estimates of Los Alaroos 1 we could made some progress toward understanding the various paraneters that are used to describe these conceptual accidents. After this study was started it became obvious that the reactor accident ' > problem was too conplicated to be solved at once. We needed some car~ ' controlled experiments in, hopefully, a siq)le system that we could use to test our theory or calculations. In other words, we felt the need to be able' to solve a somewhat more restricted problem before attacking the more difficult one of reactor accidents. The sinple system which we have studied to test the oalcula~on is that of the LASL•s Lacy Godiva. Before I describe the cal.culation w use, it is worthwhile reviewing what Lady Godiva is, and the prompt burst program she ~ experienced.Godiva is a bare 1 highl,y-enriched uranium metal assmbly wM.ch is fabricated in· three sections otpat go together to form a sphere. The first slide Ulustrstes Godiva in the disassembled state. The total mass of the system is alxnrt; 5S kg LftJ~-I
scite is a Brooklyn-based organization that helps researchers better discover and understand research articles through Smart Citations–citations that display the context of the citation and describe whether the article provides supporting or contrasting evidence. scite is used by students and researchers from around the world and is funded in part by the National Science Foundation and the National Institute on Drug Abuse of the National Institutes of Health.
