Summary Studies of E. coli‐disease of newborn calves revealed that pathogenic E. coli strains may elicit a high immune response in the herd. The clinical manifestations of E. coli disease — diarrhoea, toxaemia, septicaemia — depend on the immunological protection of calves against the given pathogenic E. coli strain. In one and the same stock, several pathogenic E. coli serotypes may be present simultaneously. Strains that have been in lasting contact with the herd are in due course suppressed, owing to the high degree of immune response evoked by them and are then replaced by other strains to which the immune response is low. A similar phenomenon occurs also when the herd is treated with specific hyperimmune serum. Thus, a periodical alteration of the predominant pathogenic E. coli‐serotypes takes place. The toxaemic manifestation of E. coli disease in newborn calves is a partial colostral protection of the animals. In such cases, the invasive E. coli cannot give rise to septicaemia, but causes an intestinal condition with more or less severe toxic signs.
