The way metalanguage is used in research directly influences the accurate representation of scientific thought in the description, theorisation and analysis of the phenomena under study. Therefore, language as a means through which scientific concepts are illuminated is worth some serious attention. This article examines the use of key terminology in research publications in the field of syntax which deal with the linguistic status, the specific features, and the typology and realisations of the appositive construction. The main focus of analysis is on the inconsistent use of terms such as apposition, appositive, appositivity, appositional, and their derivatives and word combinations of a terminological nature. The arbitrary mixing and replacement of these key terms often result in significant problems regarding the meanings conveyed in the texts in which they are used and their interpretation. The study also provides a systematic review of fundamental terms and discusses some debatable solutions to their use in linguistic studies in Bulgarian, English, German, and Russian.
The article raises the question of studying the motivation of restaurant employees by the ex-ample of the development of a motivation system for the staff of the restaurant “Adam and Eve”. Significant indicators of the features of the motivational sphere of staff, both having direct contact with visitors and working in offices, have been identified. A comparative analysis was carried out, the features of the motivational sphere of the restaurant staff's personality, their impact on labor productivity were determined. The result of the anal-ysis of the restaurant's personnel management system is presented, the main proposals for the development of a motivation program are formulated. The practical aspect of the work and the insufficiently studied moti-vation of work in the field of restaurant business make the study more relevant and expedient than ever.
T he study reported in this article set out to investigate the effect of an intervention into the strategies for second language (L2) lecture comprehension. The research was conducted in a Bulgarian university context and adopted a quasi-experimental pretest-posttest design. The 15-week instructional sequence was based on explicit/ direct teaching of cognitive and metacognitive strategies for listening to lectures in English. The results indicated that the students in the experimental group (n = 34) significantly outperformed their counterparts in the comparison group (n = 25) in a multiple-choice test used as a measure for L2 lecture comprehension. The findings, therefore, suggest that the strategy-based instruction could facilitate the development of L2 lecture listening skills.
This paper focuses on the role of media linguistics and the use of media discourse in (foreign) language education. Based on an example of a specific critical incident in the context of teaching Bulgarian as a foreign language, the study concludes that (foreign) language teaching and learning should go beyond the normative spaces of the “standard” language, and that learners should be exposed to the lexico-grammatical and discourse features of different target language varieties and registers. Thus, they will expand their language repertoire beyond the perimeter of the codified standard norm of public communication, which will allow them to use the language appropriately in diverse social and cultural settings.
