Composante commune aux sanctuaires antiques et médiévaux, les statues de lions situées aux portails peuvent avoir des fonctions diverses. Les territoires du Massif central fournissent un certain nombre d’exemples de lions à vocation funéraire qui n’ont d’abord pas de lien direct avec des structures architecturales. Ces statues apotropaïques font néanmoins dès l’Antiquité partie d’un décor sculpté dont les codes ont été repris au Moyen Âge. Les églises romanes remploient ainsi les anciennes sculptures antiques, mais copient également ces modèles, précieux rappel au passé d’un édifice qui souhaite s’inscrire dans le temps long. La région du comté de la Marche (Creuse et ses marges) fournit entre le xie et le xiiie siècle une des plus grandes densités de lions monumentaux en Europe occidentale. Fermement fixés, les lions de pierre sont à l’entrée des églises et délimitent matériellement l’espace sacré de l’ecclesia de celui du monde profane.
