IoT is a man-made technology conceptualized by intelligent virtual objects, which capable of knowing all things and allows the devices around themselves to interact automatically without human control. Every year, the number of IoT devices usage is exponentially increasing and estimated as much as 75.44 billion devices will be connected in IoT network. In line with the expansion of the IoT network, the construction industry should take into consideration as otherwise the construction industry will be left behind by other industries. This is because the construction industry should utilize the applications offered by IoT to ensure the smoothness of the construction industry in the project. Therefore, the objective of this study is to identify the types of IoT applications used in the construction industry in Malaysia. The research method used to identify the types of IoT applications used is through the questionnaire method. The questionnaire was analysed using nominal analysis. A study was conducted on construction industry players which comprising of government agencies, developers, architects, engineers, quantity surveyors and class G7 contractors covering all states in Malaysia. The findings show that among the many types of IoT applications used by construction industry players are social media such as WhatsApp, Telegram and Facebook for discussion and communication purposes, the use of email for information and communication exchange and website usage as a source of reference to obtain data on company profiles, acts and policy, price quotes and so on.
Industrialised Building System [IBS] is a new method that used prefabrication components in building construction as an alternative towards enhancing construction performance. The Construction Industry Development Board [CIDB] embraced the IBS method to enhance productivity and building quality, reduce wastage on site, increase occupational safety and health, and reduce overall cost of construction. Currently, most of the IBS project developments in Malaysia are still adopting traditional procurement system. However, traditional procurement system has been criticised for its fragmented procedure to project delivery in terms of integration and collaboration of the project team. As a result of that problem, a number of issues have recently arisen such as reworks, time delay, rising costs, lack of communication and coordination, and wastages. The purpose of this research is to identify challenges of the current procurement system and to investigate the possibilities of implementing innovative type of procurement method for IBS implementation. A deductive research approach was adopted. Reviewing relevant literature before embarking into any academic research project is one way of exploring a known theory in a holistic manner. It also appears to be one of an essential feature to create a firm foundation for the research. Based on extensive literature reviews; this paper describes what are initiatives that have been taken from developed nations which are known as earlier IBS adopters and through the findings these experiences may shed some light on the type of procurement that have been adopted. This study was conducted among Grade 7 IBS contractors in Malaysia to gain further clarification on the immensity of the issues as well as assessing the research instrument. The findings from this study reveal that financial matters, lack of early involvement, lack of integration and coordination, knowledge and understanding, role and responsibility, risk liability, communication and information, attitude and relationship matters are challenges embedded in the existing procurement approach in adopting IBS. Suggestion on how innovative type of procurement method such as Separation of IBS from Main Contract, Partnering and Integrated Project Delivery [IPD] will be able to minimise the fragmentation gaps will be concluded.
Occupational accidents have been ravaging the Nigerian construction industry, the sector accounted for 39.24% of the whole occupational accidents between 2014-2016. The effects of occupational accidents can be noticed in the productivity of the construction organizations, making the sector contribute to only 4% of the GDP of the Nigerian economy. Therefore, the need to strengthen health and safety in construction sites is indispensable. This study aimed to explore the roles of construction organizations in revitalizing the health and safety of the Nigerian consecution industry. The questionnaire was used to solicit information for this study. The 300 questionnaires were distributed and 247 were returned, representing 82.33 percent, therefore, considered for the analysis of the study. SPSS software was used in the analysis of the study. The finding of the study revealed that among the top three methods considered essential to revitalizing occupational health and safety are; education and training on health and safety, compliance with health and safety regulation and laws, and enforcement of health and safety rules on the employees. The study recommends more commitment toward health and safety from construction organizations, professionals, government agencies, and employees.
Information concerning occupational accidents are far less accessible in developing nations, and where data do present, they are mostly undependable. The serious problem is under-reporting. Various types of occupational injuries information are sometimes not reported to the appropriate authorities by the construction organizations. Also, the regulatory authorities with the statutory obligation to ensure all occupational accidents are reported, perform below standard. The aim of the study therefore is to explore the method of improving the reporting of occupational accidents in the Nigerian construction industry. Literature review of under-reporting of occupational accidents was conducted, thereafter, a field survey with 300 structured questionnaires were distributed, to solicit information from the construction professionals in the Federal Capital Territory, Abuja Nigeria. 235 questionnaires were returned, therefore considered for the analysis of the study. The relative importance index was used in the analysis of the data with SPSS software. The study found that an increase in health and safety awareness will enhance employees and organizations in the recording and reporting of occupational accidents. The study suggests that organizations and employees should keep with internal accidents recording systems whether or not legal obligations to report them are in place, the reasons being for humanitarian, economic, management and industrial relations.
OHSMS has become the main part of the establishment’s lifeline and a prerequisite for its stability in the 21st century. There is a growing need for OHSMS, in its ability to solve occupational accidents and also to develop a robust relationship among the stakeholders. The mission of OHSMS has not been followed in the Nigerian construction industry. The study, therefore, explores the barriers to the development of OHSMS in the Nigerian construction industry. The study adopted a literature review of OHSMS and thereafter, 300 structured questionnaires were administered to the construction professionals in the built environment of the Nigerian nation’s Capital-Abuja. 247 of the administered questionnaires were returned, considered for the analysis of the study. The data were analysed with SPSS and excel. The findings of the study indicate that the lack of commitment of the government, inefficient regulatory authorities, and lack of expertise in the OHS activities are the major barriers to the development of OHSMS. The study recommends collaborative efforts from the construction organizations, employees, and construction professionals to support the government on the OHSMS.
