Bei ihrer Herleitung wird vorausgesetzt , daB ein elektrisches Wechselfeld die Elektronen in Schwingungen versetzt, die bei jedem ZusammenstoB des Elektrons mit den Gasmolekiilen unterbrochen werden und von neuern anfangen miissen. I n den Versuchen von B e r g m a n n und D u r i n g entspricht dem der Eintritt bzw. Austritt der Elektronen aus dem Versuchskondensator, da die Schwingungen in jenem Moment anfangen, auf den Strom im Kondensatorkreis einzuwirken, in diesem Moment aufhorea. Dabei ist es gleichgiiltig ob die Anode kurz nach dem Austritt die Elektronen auffangt oder ob sie im leeren Raum weiterfiiegen mit ihrer im Wechselfeld erworbenen Zusatzgeschwindigkeit. Im Falle von B e r g m a n n und D u r i n g bleiben alle Elektronen wahrend der gleichen Zeit im Kondensator; im Falle eines weniger verdunnten Gases dagegen wird die Zeit zwischen zwei ZusammenstijBen nicht stets dieselbe sein , sondern nach den Qesetzen der kinetischen Gastheorie verteilt sein. Deshalb konnen auf die Versuche von B e r g m a n n und D u r i n g nicht die Salpeterschen Formeln angewandt werden, sondern andere, die i m folgenden hergeleitet werden sollen.Ich nehme dabei an, daB die Kondensatorplaften einander so nahe sind, daB die Streuung der Kraftlinien am Rande vernachlassigt werden kann. Es trete ein Elektron zur Zeit t = to in den Kondensator und verlasse ihn Bur Zeit t = to + T.
