The present communication deals with the taxonomic enumeration of 23 taxa representing 12 species, 09 varieties, 02 forms of the genus Scenedesmus Meyen of order Chlorococcales from Anjani dam in Erandol Tahsil of Jalgaon district, Maharashtra. Among all these taxa Scenedesmus arcuatus, S. arcuatus var. capitatus, S. bijugatus var. alternans, S. dimorphus, S. platydiscus, S. quadricauda are being recorded as the dominant species from the Anjani dam.
Single Nucleotide Polymorphisms (SNPs) are the commonest type of nucleotide variation distributed throughout the genome and have enormous potential to saturate genetic maps. However, their identification is constrained by the huge investment required for their detection. In this study, we used publicly available EST (Expressed Sequence Tag) sequences to identify SNPs in Sorghum bicolor. A total of 12,421 putative SNPs were identified from 2,921 contiguous transcripts leading to an average SNP interval of one putative SNP for every 275.26 bp. The proportion of transition type mutations (0.598) was larger than transversion types conforming to biological expectations. In order to demonstrate the utility of the SNPs for development of markers with relatively cheap assays, we experimentally validated SNPs using Single Strand Conformation Polymorphism (SSCP) technique in sorghum accessions, which are used as parents for development mapping populations. Genotyping these parents of mapping populations with SSCP markers showed up to 33% polymorphism in the markers suggesting that the SNPs can be used as potential resource for S. bicolor crop improvement programs.
Study conducted to indentify the spread of invasive species of armyworm, Spodoptera frugiperda to other major crops thus, roving surveys were conducted from December 2018 in some parts of Belgaum revealed that incidence of fall armyworm on sugarcane crop also apart from maize and sorghum in Karnataka. Survey conducted in and around Hukkeri, talukas, where the younger crop (30-45days old) was infested by armyworm, Spodoptera frugiperda. Less damage was recorded on ratoon sugarcane as well as older crop. Newly sown sugarcane crop of 30-45 days in some pockets of Hukkeri taluka having initial damage of 0-5 per cent incidence. More incidence was observed on maize + sugarcane intercropping and also where the farmers followed Rabi crops as sugarcane and maize. Incidence was also noticed in one of the sugarcane trial at Bellad Bagewadi.
scite is a Brooklyn-based organization that helps researchers better discover and understand research articles through Smart Citations–citations that display the context of the citation and describe whether the article provides supporting or contrasting evidence. scite is used by students and researchers from around the world and is funded in part by the National Science Foundation and the National Institute on Drug Abuse of the National Institutes of Health.
