Abstract. Askar H, Tahang H, Sutinah S, Fakhriyyah S, Bahar A, Tresnati J, Tuwo A. 2021. Short Communication: Using ecological parameters to assess the sustainability of mangrove ecotourism in Jeneponto, South Sulawesi, Indonesia. Biodiversitas 22: 3571-3577. Mangrove forest is an essential ecosystem that provides various ecosystem services. Among various land use management in mangrove areas, ecotourism is considered as a sustainable economic activity that can improve socio-economic benefits while conserving the mangrove ecosystem. Therefore, ecotourism management must refer to sustainable development principles. This study aims to assess the sustainability status of mangrove forests in Idaman Mangrove Ecotourism in Balang Baru Village, Tarowang Sub-district, Jeneponto District, South Sulawesi, Indonesia using some parameters including the extent, density and diversity of mangrove vegetation, tidal height and animal biota that occurred in the mangroves. The study used line transect method and quadrat transect, and the data were analyzed using Rapfish (Rapid Appraisal for Fisheries) method. The study indicated that the sustainability status of IME for the ecological dimension was in the entirely sustainable category with an ecological dimension value was 58.50. While the mangrove is currently managed sustainably, to go further, it requires all stakeholders' cooperation in improving the dimensions of sustainability, which had a low value, especially the mangrove trees thickness.
The study was conducted in 4 districts or cities in the province of South Sulawesi, namely Takalar, Maros, Gowa, and Barru. The locations were deliberately chosen with the consideration that they are the potential development areas for women working in product diversification processed in domestic processing industries. The study had been carried out for six (6) months, from May 2019 to October 2019. The subjects of the study were 50 groups of women in small and medium enterprises (SMEs). The data was analyzed by using the analysis of excellence, analysis of R/C ratio, and SWOT analysis. The results of the study showed that the level of financial feasibility of the women groups in product diversification processed in domestic processing industries needed to be developed. Therefore, strategies that can be applied for women’s empowerment are: increasing work motivation and skills to support the sustainability of the production, improving product quality and quantity to access broad market especially the export market, improving the government programs for women’s empowerment, and conducting mentoring and coaching needed for the women’s groups. The W-O strategies that can be done are strengthening capital for business development, building partnerships and strengthening networks, ensuring that the production equipment assistance programs are equitable and in accordance with the groups’ needs, improving the quality of faculty of political sciences and communication graduates in accordance with the quality assurance standards (ISO) through mentoring and coaching. In addition, the S-T strategies that can be applied are strengthening the SME institutional groups and improving coaching to SME groups. Furthermore, the W-T strategies that can be implemented are conducting market research on the development of product quality and quantity.
The current study aims to introduce online social media to support seaweed farmers and as a conflict resolution strategy. Seaweed farmers have the power to develop seaweed because the product has a positive impact on the socioeconomic. This study observes the roles of online media in supporting seaweed production. This research found that an increase in seaweed production can improve the economic conditions of the community. The weaknesses of seaweed farmers are their low capital, low skills, low level of education, and low support for infrastructure. One skill required is the mastery of technology, especially online media. Online media are one of the vital tools that can help seaweed business processes. Therefore, seaweed farmers should know how to use online social media. The potential cultivation of seaweed is very much enhanced by a pattern of cooperation between seaweed farmers, other farmers, and other collaborations. The threats faced by the research area include the diminishing desire of the younger generation to cultivate seaweed, the very low skill related to using online social media, and extreme weather as an annual problem. We find that the role of online media is crucial to minimizing the risk factors for conflict.
