O artigo apresenta histórias sobre o bicarbonato de sódio na Química a partir de um trabalho de conclusão do curso de Química Licenciatura da Universidade Federal do Rio Grande - FURG. O encontro com a temática de investigação ocorreu na disciplina de Monografia I por meio das experiências e das vivências de uma das autoras deste texto, aluna da Licenciatura em Química, e sua necessidade de compreender mais sobre os processos fermentativos químicos. Busca-se compreender como o bicarbonato de sódio se tornou historicamente uma substância utilizada nos processos fermentativos a partir das contribuições dos possíveis responsáveis pela síntese do bicarbonato e seu uso no fermento químico. Finaliza-se com uma análise do processo de pesquisa em torno dessa substância e sua aproximação com a História da Química como possibilidade de abordagem de elementos históricos à experimentação no Ensino de Química.
