I would especially like to thank Paul Griffiths for his help in identifying and locating many of the historical resources used in this thesis including the primary source. Andy Hochstetler helped identify some of the seminal work done on the study of crowds by social psychologists. And Craig Anderson provided Cynthia Buettner's dissertation on rioting college crowds which created an interest in the qualitative research done on these crowds which is incorporated into this thesis. All three provided helpful comments and corrections to earlier drafts of this thesis. They should be credited to any extent that this thesis has accomplished its objective. Any failure is, of course, my own.
