Purpose-The purpose of this paper was to review related literature on community service initiatives, benefits and the involvement of librarians in Community service programme with a focus on the University of Port Harcourt Community Service programme. This review was also undertaken to establish a link between the Community Service programme and purposeful librarianship.Methodology-Related literature was reviewed on involvement of academic librarians in community service programmes/initiatives in Universities with a focus on University of Port Harcourt community service programme.Findings-Community service programmes and initiatives play an essential role in linking students with host communities and provide the opportunities and prospects for the development of entrepreneurial skills. This paper highlighted the benefits of community service activities to all the stakeholders. It also exposed the problem of little or non-involvement of librarians in community service initiatives. This problem is more pronounced in Nigeria where librarians of all categories are not involved.Originality-This is a baseline review as no such paper has been written on this topic. Thus, it provides the basic information needed for further studies in this area.
This paper surveyed the impact of Web developmental stages on academic libraries in Nigeria. Literature regarding technological advancements in Web developmental stages with the associated innovations in library services were collected and utilized for the paper. The literature was provided a baseline data for the paper. Library services which could leverage on information communication technology (ICT) were identified. The paper highlighted the technological innovations and tools associated with each Web developmental stage and outlined how these could be adopted and integrated into the mainstream of library operations in-order to ensure improved service delivery especially in academic libraries. It concluded that technology has proven to be the future of information management and dissemination. It, therefore, urged librarians/libraries to embrace technologies and move with the trend in the information industry. The paper recommended the incorporation of computer science in library schools to train librarians who are ICT-competent to drive the course of ICT-compliant libraries.
The paper reviewed the emerging roles of the 21 st century librarians who are managers of repository services across libraries in present day information technology environments. Librarians need to be trained in requisite skills and be empowered for successful management of the ICT driven repository initiatives of the 21 st century. Literature was reviewed on the roles and responsibilities of librarians, training needs and opportunities, career path of librarians, and community support necessary for effective and efficient implementation and management of repository initiatives. This entails the ability to comprehend trends and change patterns which are essential for providing research focused and user friendly models in open repository services, based on thorough analytical understanding of the challenges of emerging trends. Librarians need training and retraining in order to reposition themselves in their career path. The library is an integral part of its social environment, that is to educate the community about the existence of an open repository; building partnership with community-oriented research centres through seminars, workshops, symposium, training, and awareness programmes. The paper recommends that librarians should strategize and collaborate with researchers to make open repository an essential research tool.
