Advances in computational algorithms and methodologies make it possible to use highly accurate quantum mechanical calculations to develop force fields (pair-wise additive intermolecular potentials) for condensed phase simulations. Despite these advances, this approach faces numerous hurdles for the case of actinyl ions, AcO2(n+) (high-oxidation-state actinide dioxo cations), mainly due to the complex electronic structure resulting from an interplay of s, p, d, and f valence orbitals. Traditional methods use a pair of molecules (“dimer”) to generate a potential energy surface (PES) for force field parametrization based on the assumption that many body polarization effects are negligible. We show that this is a poor approximation for aqueous phase uranyl ions and present an alternative approach for the development of actinyl ion force fields that includes important many body solvation effects. Force fields are developed for the UO2(2+) ion with the SPC/Fw, TIP3P, TIP4P, and TIP5P water models and are validated by carrying out detailed molecular simulations on the uranyl aqua ion, one of the most characterized actinide systems. It is shown that the force fields faithfully reproduce available experimental structural data and hydration free energies. Failure to account for solvation effects when generating PES leads to overbinding between UO2(2+) and water, resulting in incorrect hydration free energies and coordination numbers. A detailed analysis of arrangement of water molecules in the first and second solvation shell of UO2(2+) is presented. The use of a simple functional form involving the sum of Lennard-Jones + Coulomb potentials makes the new force field compatible with a large number of available molecular simulation engines and common force fields.

Intra- and intermolecular force field parameters for the interaction of actinyl ions (AnO2(n+), where, An = U, Np, Pu, Am and n = 1, 2) with water have been developed using quantum mechanical calculations. Water was modeled with the extended simple point charge potential (SPC/E). The resulting force field consists of a simple form in which intermolecular interactions are modeled with pairwise Lennard-Jones functions plus partial charge terms. Intramolecular bond stretching and angle bending are treated with harmonic functions. The new potentials were used to carry out extensive molecular dynamics simulations for each hydrated ion. Computed bond lengths, bond angles and coordination numbers agree well with known values and previous simulations. Hydration free energies, computed from molecular dynamics simulations as well as from quantum simulations with a solvation model, were in reasonable agreement with estimated experimental values.

The dynamics of actinyl ions (AnO2(n+)) in aqueous solutions is important not only for the design of advanced separation processes but also for understanding the fate of actinides in the environment. The hazardous nature of actinides makes it difficult to measure transport and thermodynamic properties experimentally, so predictive simulations are an attractive method for studying these systems. Here, we report the results of atomistic-level molecular dynamics simulations of actinyl ions (of U, Np, Pu, and Am) in their mono- and dication states in aqueous solution. Quantum mechanically derived force field parameters are used to compute self-diffusion coefficients of the actinyl ions, water exchange mechanisms, and residence times of water molecules in the first solvation shell of the actinyl ions. We find that monocation actinyl ions diffuse slightly faster than their dication counterparts. Our simulations suggest that there are two distinct water exchange mechanisms for mono and dications. An associative interchange pathway is observed for water exchange involving dication actinyls, while in monocation actinyls the exchange occurs via a dissociative mechanism. The residence time of water molecules in the first solvation shell depends on the water exchange mechanism. In the case of dications, a stiffer actinyl bond angle results in a longer residence time, while for monocations, a shorter water coordination distance leads to a longer residence time. The simulations predict much faster water exchange for UO2(2+) than what is observed experimentally with NMR, but other properties are consistent with experiments.

A computational scheme was used to screen physical solvents for CO 2 pre-combustion capture by integrating the commercial NIST database, an in-house computational database, cheminformatics, and molecular modeling. A commercially available screened hydrophobic solvent, diethyl sebacate, was identified from the screening with favorable physical properties and promising absorption performance. The promising performance to use diethyl sebacate in CO 2 pre-combustion capture has also been confirmed from experiments. Water loading in diethyl sebacate is very low, and therefore, water is kept with H 2 in the gas stream. The favorable CO 2 interaction with diethyl sebacate and the intermediate solvent free volume fraction leads to both high CO 2 solubility and high CO 2 /H 2 solubility selectivity in diethyl sebacate. An in-house NETL computational database was built to characterize CO 2 , H 2 , N 2 , and H 2 O interactions with 202 different chemical functional groups. It was found that 13% of the functional groups belong to the strong interaction category with the CO 2 interaction energy between −15 and −21 kJ/mol; 62% of the functional groups interact intermediately with CO 2 (−8 to −15 kJ/mol). The remaining 25% of functional groups interact weakly with CO 2 (below −8 kJ/mol). In addition, calculations show that CO 2 interactions with the functional groups are stronger than N 2 and H 2 interactions but are weaker than H 2 O interactions. The CO 2 and H 2 O interactions with the same functional groups exhibit a very strong linear positive correlation coefficient of 0.92. The relationship between CO 2 and H 2 gas solubilities and solvent fractional free volume (FFV) has been systematically studied for seven solvents at 298.2 K. A skewed bell-shaped relation was obtained between CO 2 solubility and solvent FFV. When an organic compound has a density approximately 10% lower than its density at 298.2 K and 1 bar, it exhibits the highest CO 2 loading at that specific solvent density and FFV. Note that the solvent densities were varied using simulations, which are difficult to be obtained from the experiment. In contrast, H 2 solubility results exhibit an almost perfect positive linear correlation with the solvent FFV. The theoretical maximum and minimum physical CO 2 solubilities in any organic compound at 298.2 K were estimated to be 11 and 0.4 mol/MPa L, respectively. An examination of 182 experimental CO 2 physical solubility data and 29 simulated CO 2 physical solubilities shows that all the CO 2 physical solubility data are within the maximum and minimum with only a few exceptions. Finally, simulations suggest that in order to develop physical solvents with both high CO 2 solubility and high CO 2 / H 2 solubility selectivity, the solvents should contain functional groups which are available to interact strongly with CO 2 while minimizing FFV.

Actinyl ions (AnO2n+), the form in which actinides are commonly found in aqueous solution, are important species in the nuclear fuel cycle. These ions can form stable complexes with ionic ligands such as OH-, NO3-, Cl-, and even other actinyl ions in the aqueous phase. Knowledge of the relative stabilities of these complexes is important for the efficient design of separation processes used in recycling. These complexes also play a major role in the formation of actinide nanoclusters. A quantitative treatment of the stability of these actinyl ion complexes is therefore warranted. In the present work, molecular dynamics (MD) simulations have been performed to calculate the potential of mean force (PMF) between two actinyl ions (UO22+ and NpO2+) and various ligands (F-, Cl-, OH-, NO3-, SO42-, CO32-, Na+, and H2O) in explicitly-modeled aqueous solution. Equilibrium constants were calculated from the PMFs, and are consistent with experimental trends. Dication actinyls show stronger affinity for anions compared to monocation actinyls, whereas the opposite is true for cation-cation interactions between actinyls. Finally, the dynamics of actinyl-ligand contact ion pair (CIP) dissociation were characterized by calculating rate constants from transition state theory. The transmission coefficient, a dynamical correction factor used to correct for reaction barrier recrossing, was calculated for each actinyl-ligand CIP dissociation event.

This work describes the preparation of a set of nine new novel hydrophobic PEG-substituted solvents. These solvents include linear, T-shaped, and disubstituted conformations of the PEG grafted with PDMS molecule. The effect of changing both the molecular conformation and length of PEG side arm on the physical properties and CO2 absorption capacity was studied. These solvents are intended for separation of CO2 and H2 in precombustion CO2 capture and are intended to replace the current-state-of-the-art glycol-based solvents and operate at a higher temperature. The properties of the disubstituted solvents are exceptionally well suited for precombustion CO2 capture applications because of their hydrophobicity, high CO2 solubility, low evaporation rate, and lack of foaming.

We have explored the relationship between physical properties and foaming behavior of 30 wt % aqueous monoethanolamine (MEA) solutions with three different surfactant-like additives. The additives included one commercial surfactant, cetyltrimethylammonium bromide (CTAB), and two CO 2 capture catalysts that behave as weak surfactants. The physical properties of interest were the additives' affinity for the liquid−vapor interface and the viscosity, surface tension, and surface elasticity of the solutions. The physical properties were explored using molecular dynamics simulations as well as experiments. The additives' affinity for the liquid−vapor interface played a key role in the foaming behavior by affecting the interfacial properties (surface tension and surface elasticity) of the aqueous MEA solutions. The solution containing CTAB showed the largest surface tension depression and the largest surface elasticity and resulted in the largest amount of foaming. The two catalyst solutions had almost similar surface tensions but differed in their elasticity. The catalyst solution with higher surface elasticity showed more foaming due to higher foam stability.

The aggregation of uranyl nanoclusters is investigated with molecular dynamics simulations.
