Pachydermoperiostosis, also known as Touraine-Solente-Golé syndrome/Rosenfeld-Kloepfer syndrome/primary or idiopathic Hypertrophic osteoarthropathy, is an autosomal-dominant/autosomal recessive inherited disorder with variable expression. In its complete form, it is characterized by pachyderma (thickening of the facial skin), skeletal changes (periostosis), excessive sweating (hyperhydrosis), and acropachia (digital clubbing). We report a patient with skeletal symptoms, associated with pachyderma and clubbing of fingers. Radiographs of patient showed periosteosis of distal end of long bones. We review the characteristic features of this syndrome. The patient required a close follow-up because of complications that might develop on the long-term.
Background: Human papilloma virus is the major cause of cervical cancer in women and HPV vaccine is the most effective option. Prevention of cancer with vaccine is a new concept. Medical students should be aware of cervical cancer, HPV and its vaccine. This calls for assessment of the knowledge of HPV infection and the acceptability of HPV vaccine among medical students. The aim of this study was to assess awareness of HPV infection and HPV vaccine and to assess attitude toward these vaccines among final year medical students in Sri Venkateswara Medical College, Tirupati. Methods: It is a cross-sectional study. A total of 127 (59 males and 68 females) final year M.B.B.S. students participated. Data regarding HPV and its vaccine were collected using questionnaire based survey. The questionnaire sought student responses pertaining to the knowledge of cervical cancer, HPV and its vaccine. The data were analyzed using Microsoft Access and Excel software. Results: Most of the participants know well about the etiology and prevention of cervical cancer but information regarding the dosage, schedule, site and route of administration was lacking in majority of them. Conclusion: The medical students know the association between Human Papilloma Virus and cervical cancer, but the awareness about HPV vaccine was low among study population. Medical schools should modify their curricula to include teaching methods aimed at improving awareness regarding HPV and its vaccine. Background: The Incidence of trauma related skeletal injuries have been on the rise in recent years and proximal humerus fractures are one of the most common fractures occurring in the human body. Hence the present study was conducted to evaluate the clinical and functional outcome of the proximal humeral internal locking system (PHILOS) technology. The present study was undertaken to assess the functional and radiological outcome of the proximal humeral internal locking system (PHILOS) for displaced proximal humeral fractures in adults. Method: The present prospective observational study was conducted in adults with proximal humerus fractures admitted to department of orthopedics, GSL Medical College and General hospital Rajahmundry during study period from 1 st October 2015 to 31 st March 2017. The study was approved by the institute's ethical committee. Patients were undergoing Open reduction internal fixation with philos locking plating for the sustained fracture under general anaesthesia. Post-operative physiotherapy followed according to protocol, to evaluate the functional outcome. Result: The average age of patients was 44 years. Males were 16 and females were 09. Most common mechanism of injury observed was Road traffic accident in 72%. The Constant-Murley score was significantly improved (p=.000) over the successive follow-up period. 01 (04%) patient had excellent Constant-Murley scores, 11 (44%) patients had good scores, as like 11 (44%) had moderate scores and only 2 (08%) patients had a poor functional outcome. Conclusion: In conclusion, the proximal humeral locking plate seems to be an adequate device for the fixation of displaced two-part, threepart and four-part proximal humerus fractures. Due to stable fixation, early functional aftercare is possible and allows the patient to regain good shoulder function and resume normal activities much earlier.
