T w o major dificulties in designing a single-hop multichannel local lightwave network are: relatively large transmitter/receiver tuning overhead and large ratio of propagation delay t o packet transmission tame. W e propose several scheduling algorithms which can reduce the negative impact of tuning overhead and schedule variable-length messages. Thus, a long message can be scheduled with a single control packet transmission, instead of being segmented into many fixed-length packets, thereby significantly increasing the system's eficiency. Three novel scheduling algorithms are proposed i n this paper, varying in the amount of global information and processing time. T w o approximate analytical models are formulated to study the eflect of tuning time and the effect of having a limited number of data channels. The system's performance is found t o improve (1) if a simple mechanism is e m loyed to avoid unnecessary transceiver tuning and/or b) if a predictive transmittertuning strategy is adopted.
scite is a Brooklyn-based organization that helps researchers better discover and understand research articles through Smart Citations–citations that display the context of the citation and describe whether the article provides supporting or contrasting evidence. scite is used by students and researchers from around the world and is funded in part by the National Science Foundation and the National Institute on Drug Abuse of the National Institutes of Health.
