The authors report for the first time the size dependency of the elastic modulus of well-aligned single polymeric nanofibers. The nanofibers were fabricated from electroactive polymers (EAPs) and had an ellipsoidal cross section because of impingement between a solid surface and a polymer jet during electrospinning. Although the EAPs had very weak mechanical properties in the bulk, the elastic modulus of single EAP nanofibers increased exponentially as the diameter of the EAP nanofibers decreased to diameters of a few tens of nanometers. The elastic modulus of single nanofibers was measured using three-point bending tests employing an atomic force microscope.
Proteomic and other characterization of plasma membrane proteins is made difficult by their low abundance, hydrophobicity, frequent carboxylation and dynamic population. We and others have proposed that underrepresentation in LC-MS/MS analysis can be partially compensated by enriching the plasma membrane and its proteins using cationic nanoparticle pellicles. The nanoparticles increase the density of plasma membrane sheets and thus enhance separation by centrifugation from other lysed cellular components. Herein we test the hypothesis that the use of nanoparticles with increased densities can provide enhanced enrichment of plasma membrane proteins for proteomic analysis. Multiple myeloma cells were grown and coated in suspension with three different pellicles of three different densities and both pellicle coated and uncoated suspensions analyzed by high-throughput LC-MS/MS. Enrichment was evaluated by the total number and the spectral counts of identified plasma membrane proteins.
Films of chemically shortened and functionalized single-walled carbon nanotubes (SWNTs) have been formed on a gold electrode by electrophoretic deposition. Applying ultrasonic energy resulted in dramatic changes of the film morphology; the deposited SWNT bundles reassembled and oriented normal to the electrode. Oriented SWNT bundles with high density (more than 250 bundles/microm (2)) not only presented narrow size distributions, but uniformly spread on the electrode. We discuss the mechanism of SWNT orientation by analyzing the variation in the film morphology with ultrasonication time. In addition, we suggest that the 3D displays of AFM images can lead to misjudgment of nanotube alignment. The method for aligning SWNTs normal to the electrode may be competitive with chemical vapor deposition or screen printing, the predominant methods by which vertically aligned SWNT films have been fabricated to date.
scite is a Brooklyn-based organization that helps researchers better discover and understand research articles through Smart Citations–citations that display the context of the citation and describe whether the article provides supporting or contrasting evidence. scite is used by students and researchers from around the world and is funded in part by the National Science Foundation and the National Institute on Drug Abuse of the National Institutes of Health.
