It is well known (Dantzig, 1940) that based on a sample of given size from a univariate normal distribution with all unknown parameters, there does not exist a confidence interval for the mean with a preassigned length and a positive confidence coefficient. In this article we extend this result to the case of a multivariate normal population following a more direct approach recently considered by Lehmann (1986).
scite is a Brooklyn-based organization that helps researchers better discover and understand research articles through Smart Citations–citations that display the context of the citation and describe whether the article provides supporting or contrasting evidence. scite is used by students and researchers from around the world and is funded in part by the National Science Foundation and the National Institute on Drug Abuse of the National Institutes of Health.
