O artigo busca discutir faces da organização, produção agrícola e conflitos ocorridos no interior de povoações indígenas localizadas nas proximidades do rio Turiaçu, na fronteira entre o Pará e o Maranhão na última década do século XVIII, e os motivos e interesses que levaram o governador da capitania do Pará Francisco de Souza Coutinho a propor um novo projeto de civilização das populações indígenas que viviam nas povoações e as medidas tomadas a partir da publicação da Carta Régia promulgada em 1798 que prévia o auto governo das populações indígenas e pôs fim aos espaços e bens indígenas previstos pelo Diretório. Assim como perceber os desdobramentos da aplicação da Carta Régia no início do século XIX que deram novos direcionamentos e sentidos as povoações indígenas e seus bens comuns.
Esta tese discute a ocupação da fronteira entre o Pará e o Maranhão, de 1790 a 1852. Mais pontualmente, analisa os encontros e embates entre os colonizadores e os diversos moradores que ali estavam ou que chegaram à região nesse período. Destacam-se, primeiramente, as investidas do governo colonial português a fim de tornar a região colonizada por pessoas "úteis" aos interesses Régios. Nesse processo, abriram-se estradas, ergueram-se povoados e vilas, além de terem sido doadas terras por carta de data de sesmarias para a produção de gado e para a agricultura. Todavia, paralela à abundância e riquezas potenciais da terra, sempre havia a busca do pretendido "controle" sobre as populações locais. Este processo "colonizador" ganhou força a partir da administração de Francisco de Souza Coutinho no Pará, mas também recebeu, nesse momento, muitos sujeitos não "desejados". Eram novos indígenas aldeados e transferidos, negros de origem africana e muitos homens brancos e mestiços pobres, sendo alguns degredados, outros servidores militares, além de fugitivos. Este localcentro de enorme diversidade étnica e culturaltornou-se um barril de pólvora em dois grandes levantes: o primeiro em 1824, no contexto das lutas de independência; e outro em 1835, com a Cabanagem. A tese finaliza a análise no início dos anos de 1850, não porque os moradores não mais se rebelaram, mas devido à resolução da disputa quando finalmente a administração imperial decide passar a região para a tutela maranhense e os focos de conflitos ganharam novos contornos e dismensões que extrapolariam este trabalho.
