Segundo a Organização Mundial de Saúde, em 2025, o Brasil será o sexto país em número de população de pessoa idosa. Diante disso, procurou-se analisar sobre os aspectos sociais e culturais que podem contribuir para o acometimento de quedas em pessoas idosas e investigar como estão as condições de moradia e a infraestrutura da comunidade onde estas residem. O trabalho caracteriza-se por ter uma natureza descritiva e exploratória, sendo de caráter quantitativo e qualitativo. Foi utilizado um questionário estruturado para a coleta dos dados. Participaram da pesquisa cem pessoas idosas admitidas em um hospital filantrópico do município de Aracaju/SE, no ano de 2014. Alguns dos resultados obtidos referentes aos fatores extrínsecos mostraram que 51% das pessoas idosas possuem apenas cama e guarda-roupa no quarto, 85% não possuem quarto com suíte, 56% dos banheiros possuíam o piso escorregadio, 63% não usam tapetes. Sobre o local da queda, 74% ocorreram no domicilio. 97% das pessoas idosas não eram acamadas e caíram realizando atividades rotineiras, sendo que 24% realizavam todas as atividades da vida diária e 37% realizavam apenas algumas destas. Sobre as fraturas, o maior índice foi as do fêmur, que atingiu 79% dessa população. Acerca dos fatores intrínsecos observa-se que 80% dos entrevistados faziam uso de medicação e já possuíam algum tipo de doença. Considera-se que os fatores extrínsecos envolvem o ambiente, enquanto os intrínsecos envolvem doenças e uso de medicamentos, que podem contribuir para ocorrência de quedas, sendo necessário que a pessoa idosa e seus familiares sejam orientados para preveni-las.
A população idosa cresce significativamente, e por ser a família a principal instituição responsável por cuidar de seus membros, a pessoa idosa passa a maior parte do seu tempo convivendo com seus familiares. Assim, procurou-se as principais causas sociais e culturais que podem provocar quedas nas pessoas idosas admitidos em um hospital filantrópico, verificando para tanto a estrutura familiar e a relação existente com os fatores direcionados à queda. A metodologia utilizada teve base na pesquisa bibliográfica e na aplicação de questionário estruturado. Além disso, o trabalho se caracteriza por ter uma natureza descritiva e exploratória, sendo ainda de caráter quantitativo e qualitativo. Diante do exposto, torna-se perceptível como resultado que as pessoas idosas acometidas de quedas, principalmente do sexo feminino, residem com familiares (em sua maioria), ou em alguns casos moram com amigos. O principal local de queda é na própria residência. As famílias são a principal fonte de cuidados das pessoas idosas, sejam estas dependentes ou não; no entanto, elas necessitam de maior orientação para a prestação de cuidados. É necessária uma avaliação socioeconômica da família e da pessoa idosa, de modo que seja possível oferecer subsídios para o planejamento das intervenções da equipe multiprofissional. Desse modo, o Estado estruturou uma rede de suporte para famílias que possuem pessoas idosas e podem necessitar de assistência. É necessário também mais pesquisas sobre a temática e sua divulgação por meio de palestras socioeducativas, o que poderá contribuir para a prevenção e recuperação das pessoas idosas vítimas de quedas.
