O presente artigo, construído por meio de pesquisa bibliográfica, documental e de experiência profissional, considerando a possibilidade de analisar indicadores que ainda não receberam tratamento científico, tem, como objetivo, discutir sobre a gestão hospitalar no que toca à segurança do paciente a partir do trabalho desenvolvido no Hospital Geral de Barcelos/AM. O interesse pelo debate proposto se justifica em função do conhecimento, propiciado pela prática profissional, de que todos os pacientes admitidos em um serviço de saúde estão sujeitos a determinados incidentes relacionados à assistência hospitalar (que não estão vinculados à sua doença de base), situação que pode afetar a saúde e recuperação dos usuários desta política pública. Pode-se citar, como exemplo desta realidade, os pacientes que realizam cirurgias para remoção de cálculos na vesícula biliar, os quais estão expostos, após o procedimento cirúrgico, a uma queda da maca durante o transporte do Centro Cirúrgico para a enfermaria, levando à fratura do fêmur, o que pode, consequentemente, resultar na prolongação do tempo de internação. Como forma de reduzir estas e outras situações de risco, o Programa Nacional de Segurança do Paciente (PNSP) foi lançado no Brasil em 2013, tendo contribuído para a qualificação dos cuidados com a saúde em todos os estabelecimentos do país, destacando o trabalho da gestão local e dos profissionais atuantes na unidade hospitalar em questão, o qual, atualmente, responde pelos maiores cuidados com a saúde neste território. Nesta perspectiva, será evidenciada, como principal resultado na segurança do paciente, a implantação das ações do PNSP no município de Barcelos/AM, bem como versa-se sobre a organização de um checklist contendo o passo a passo a ser seguido pelos profissionais, intervenção esta que tem contribuído para a diminuição dos riscos ao público, direcionada, sobretudo, aos equipamentos de saúde nesta localidade.
