ABSTRACTObjective: To characterize the touch performed by nursing professionals in children hospitalized in a university hospital in southern Brazil. Method: This is a quantitative, observational and descriptive research. A sample consisted of 30 children and the patients under their care and full on the day of the research, in the morning and afternoon periods. The data were collected from a study that evaluated the support by nursing professionals in the patient. Outcome: Observations 86 touches, of these (72.09%) were in the instrumental-expressive type, (19.76%), without instrumental type and only (8.14%) in the expressive type. Most touches occurred in the evening period (59.3%) and the most touched parts of the body were the arms (29.78%). Conclusion: The present article has a higher incidence of instrumental-expressive touch, which demonstrates its frequency in the units and the risk is still realized only in the moments reserved for a contest.
