Atividades portuárias são importantes economicamente, mas são consideradas fontes de substâncias tóxicas devido à presença de poluentes capazes de afetar negativamente os organismos dos ecossistemas aquáticos. Peixes se mostram sensíveis aos poluentes, podendo apresentar respostas como alterações morfológicas, bioquímicas e histológicas, conhecidas como biomarcadores. analisar biomarcadores histológicos (alterações hepáticas e branquiais) no bagre estuarino Sciades herzbergii (Bloch, 1794), contribuindo com informações científicas sobre a situação ambiental da região portuária e de uma área de proteção ambiental de São Luís -MA. Vinte espécimes foram coletados no período de estiagem, em marés de quadratura, utilizando-se armadilhas de pesca fixas, conhecidas como tapagem. Os peixes foram coletados, acondicionados e seus órgãos fixados em formol e submetidos ao procedimento histológico padrão. Foram realizados cortes transversais que passaram pelo processo de coloração, para montagem em lâminas para fins histológicos. Foram ainda obtidos dados abióticos da água e de morfometria dos peixes. As principais alterações branquiais encontradas em ambas as regiões foram: deslocamento do epitélio, com 35% (A1) e 39,53% (A2), e fusão das lamelas secundárias, com 16,66% (A1) e 30,23% (A2). Quanto ao fígado, as alterações mais observadas em ambas as regiões foram os centros de melanomacrófagos, correspondentes a 41,21% (A1) e 36,58% (A2), degeneração tecidual mais frequente em A1 com 19,50% e vacuolização bastante presente em A2, com 17,07%. Biomarcadores branquiais foram mais presentes nos peixes em Porto Grande e alterações hepáticas foram mais frequentes nos bagres na Ilha dos Caranguejos. A partir do somatório estatístico de biomarcadores em brânquias e fígado de cada organismo, os peixes da região do Porto apresentaram um maior número de alterações. Todavia, como os organismos da região de Proteção Ambiental também demonstraram alterações severas conforme os índices de Bernet, é possível inferir que ambas as regiões estudadas estão impactadas e influenciando nas respostas histológicas dos peixes analisados.

This study aimed to identify alterations in gills and hepatopancreas of the crab Ucides cordatus as indicative of environmental contamination in mangrove areas subject to chemical effluents from port activities in Maranhão, Brazil. Samples of gills and hepatopancreas were removed from each animal and fixed in Davidson's solution until the procedure of histological technique. The biometric data (means and standard deviations) of the specimens collected in the study areas indicated that the crabs in the reference area are significantly (P < 0.05) higher and heavier than the crabs collected in the potentially impacted area (port area). Gill alterations (rupture of pilaster cells, dilation of the marginal channel, cuticle rupture and necrosis) and hepatopancreas alterations (abnormal lumen, vacuolized B cells, pycnotic nuclei and necrosis) were significantly (gbn < 0.05) more frequent in crabs collected in the port area than crabs collected in the reference area. These data indicate that the health of crabs is compromised due to the pollutants present in the mangroves that surround the port area in São Marcos’ Bay.

The objective of this study was to evaluate the levels of environmental contamination in a protected area in the Brazilian Amazon. For this, two areas were chosen along the Mearim River: the reference area (A1) and the potentially contaminated area (A2), where water samples were collected, for physicochemical and microbiological analyses, as well as specimens of Hoplias malabaricus, for the evaluation of biometric data and incidence of branchial lesions. The physicochemical analyzes of the water from both areas showed contamination (low levels of dissolved oxygen, tubidity and high iron concentrations, especially in A2). The microbiological analyzes showed that all water samples showed total coliform values higher than those acceptable by CONAMA and WHO (with higher values in A2), in addition to E. coli values higher than those allowed by legislation in A2. Regarding biometric data, male and female fishes were significantly longer and heavier in A1 during the dry and rain seasons and the gonadosomatic index also showed higher values in A1 than in A2 in both seasons. H. malabaricus showed gill lesions of minimal to moderate pathological importance in A1 and A2, indicating that specimens from both areas of the Mearim River showed biological responses to contamination. The observed changes in the water quality, bimetic parameters and the histological analyzes of the specimens of H. malabaricus directly reflect on the quality and health of the fishes in the Mearim River, and point to the urgent need for prevention and remediation of contamination in these ecosystems.
