The Colorado Physician Health Program, a statewide peer health assistance program for physicians, has functioned for 7 years as a freestanding, not‐for‐profit corporation. By use of an employee‐assistance model, the Program offers psychiatric evaluation, referral for treatment, and ongoing monitoring for treatment progress and ability to practice safely. A significant fraction of the physicians seen by the Program have problems or illnesses that either do not involve (or do not solely involve) substance abuse, and often such cases present diagnostic dilemmas.
