This study analyses student's perception toward the use of Internet to improve reading comprehension. This study aims: (1) to describe the students' perception of the use of Internet as teaching media in learning reading comprehension; (2) to depict the students' perception of the importance of Internet to access information; and (3) to explain the students' frequency to access Internet. This study uses the descriptive method to reveal the research problems. A questionnaire is used to collect the data. It consists of 20 questions with five options to reveal the students' perception of the use of Internet. The questionnaire is distributed to 120 students who took reading subject at the University of Muhammadiyah Malang. The study shows that (1) The students' perception toward the use of Internet to improve Reading Comprehension subject is positive; (2) According to the students, the use of Internet to access reading materials is very important; and (3) The students frequently access Internet to find the reading materials.
This study aims to reveal the students' attitude towards the use of Information and Communication Technology (ICT) as learning English Media, to describe the level of their ability to use ICT, and to portray their difficulties to apply Internet at universities. This study used quantitative and qualitative (mixed) method which consisted of two data collection techniques: questionnaire and interview. Respondents total 153 students who responded to the questionnaire and participants interviewed were four students from two private universities in Malang, East Java, Indonesia. The findings show that students have positive attitude towards ICT use as media for learning English.The data analysis strengthens the results which indicate that Internet as part of ICT functions helps students to elicit useful information. Of the 99.4% participants respond to the questionnaire which stated strongly agree or agree, its mean score is M = 4.69, and its standard deviation is SD = 0.50. The level of students' ability to apply ICT is good.Moreover, interview data indicates that students face two difficulties to apply ICT such as Internet connection problems and ICT illiteracy. The former is regarding the Internet facility given by the university. The latter deals with the students' incompetence in applying ICT because they have no Internet use experience.
Television as one of the popular culture media plays an important role in the development of students' personality and knowledge because it provides countless information and entertainment that can enhance their knowledge as the viewers. This study was conducted to give an idea whether television viewing and parental attention can assist students to take a decision of choosing major at the senior high school. This study used descriptive method which analyzed the correlation among television viewing, parental attention, and the students' motivation to choose a major. The sample of this study consisted of 100 students of the state senior high school in Malang, East Java. The finding shows that there is no correlation among television viewing, parental attention, and the students' motivation to choose major at the senior high school. In other words, the possibility of choosing the major can be attributed to some other factors such as interest, talent, aspiration, and other expectation to achieve their goals.Keywords: television, popular culture, media, parental attention, students, motivation IntroductionTelevision can be regarded as one of the popular culture media that is used by teachers in teaching and learning process (Bruce & Ewing, 2009). Moreover, the information is packaged in an attractive entertainment display. Judging from the impacts of television on adolescent behavior, Wilson (1995) argues that the dominance of television as a household activity often reduces the level of communication among family members. Therefore, culture is absorbed by the more teenagers coming from television than from parents.Similarly, Rubin (2012) claimed that the media like television is truly one of the greatest and most influential teachers. It means that television is able to provide students or viewers with much information which enable them to improve their knowledge. Likewise, Comstock, Chaffee, Katzman, McCombs, and Roberts (1978) argues that television has a number of ways that can affect the viewers' experiences. These effects include audience's behavior during television viewing and the effects on other activities. Thus, television becomes popular culture media which bring great impact on the senior high school students' learning achievement. Furthermore, if the television can influence teenagers' behavior, it is expected that television can also contribute the same thing to motivate students to choose major at the senior high school. This study aims to: 1) describe the factors that support the success of implementing Internet information technology in schools, and 2) describe the challenges of teachers in using the Internet as teaching media in schools. This research was conducted using qualitative methods that use observation and interviews. The use of these two instruments is intended to obtain information about the application of Internet technology in the teaching and learning process in the classroom, and the challenges faced by teachers in implementing the Internet as a medium of learning in schools. This research was conducted at Muhammadiyah Senior High Schools 3 and Muhammadiyah Vocational School 1 in Batu, East Java, Indonesia. The results of the study show that there are three factors in the success of implementing Internet information technology in schools. In applying Internet information technology, teachers have challenges in using the internet as a medium of education in schools. These challenges can be classified into two categories, namely 1) technical difficulties and 2) non-technical difficulties.
