Το αντικείμενο της διατριβής ήταν η μελέτη των μηχανισμών με τους οποίους το υδρόβιο φυτό Apium Nodiflorum μπορεί και επιβιώνει υπό συνθήκες χαμηλής τάσης οξυγόνου στο υπόστρωμά του. Από τη μελέτη των μεταβολών του διαλυμένου οξυγόνου στο θρεπτικό διάλυμα προέκυψε ότι το φυτό αυτό ε΄χει την ικανότητα να οξυγονώνει το υπόστρωμα μέχρι ένα επίπεδο στο οποίο μπορεί να επιβιώνει. Η ιδιαίτερη συνεισφορά της εξωτερικής επιφάνειας των μισχών στο μηχανισμό διοχέτευσης οξυγόνου στη ριζόσφαιρα επιβεβαιώθηκε με διάφορους χειρισμούς. Στη συνέχεια διερευνήθηκε το ενδεχόμενο της οξειδωτικής καταπόνησης των φυτικών ιστών μετά την άρση της υποξίας και την αύξηση της συγκέντρωσης του διαλυμένου οξυγόνου στο υπόστρωμα. Οι δείκτες που επελέγησαν περιελάμβαναν την δισμουτάση του σουπεροξειδίου, την καταλάση, το εκχυλίσιμο πρωτεϊνικό κλάσμα και επιλεγμένα κατιόντα (κάλιο, ασβέστιο, μαγνήσιο, σίδηρο, χαλκό, ψευδάργυρο και μαγγάνιο).
