Seaweeds contain a myriad of nutrients and bioactives including proteins, carbohydrates and to a lesser extent lipids as well as small molecules including peptides, saponins, alkaloids and pigments. The bioactive bromoform found in the red seaweed Asparagopsis taxiformis has been identified as an agent that can reduce enteric CH4 production from livestock significantly. However, sustainable supply of this seaweed is a problem and there are some concerns over its sustainable production and potential negative environmental impacts on the ozone layer and the health impacts of bromoform. This review collates information on seaweeds and seaweed bioactives and the documented impact on CH4 emissions in vitro and in vivo as well as associated environmental, economic and health impacts.

Residual expressions of enteric emissions favour a more equitable identification of an animals methanogenic potential compared to traditional measures of enteric emissions. The objective of this study was to investigate the effect of divergently ranking beef cattle for residual methane emissions (RME) on animal productivity, enteric emissions and rumen fermentation. Dry matter intake (DMI), growth, feed efficiency, carcass output and enteric emissions (Greenfeed emissions monitoring system) was recorded on 294 crossbred beef cattle ((steers = 135 and heifers = 159; mean age 441 days (SD = 49); initial body weight (BW) of 476 kg (SD = 67)) at the Irish national beef cattle performance test centre. Animals were offered a total mixed ration (77% concentrate and 23% forage; 12.6 MJ ME/kg of DM and 12% CP) ad libitum with emissions estimated for 21 days over a mean feed intake measurement period of 91 days. Animals had a mean daily methane emissions (DME) of 229.18 g/d (SD = 45.96), methane yield (MY) of 22.07 g/kg of DMI (SD = 4.06), methane intensity (MI) 0.70g/kg of carcass weight (SD = 0.15) and RME 0.00 g/d (SD = 0.34). RME was computed as the residuals from a multiple regression model regressing DME on DMI and BW (R 2=0.45%). Animals were ranked into three groups viz. high RME (>0.5 SD above the mean), medium RME (±0.5 SD above/below the mean) and low RME (>0.5 SD below the mean). Low RME animals produced 17.6 and 30.4% less (P<0.05) DME compared to medium and high RME animals, respectively. A ~30% reduction in MY and MI was detected in low vs. high RME animals. Positive correlations were apparent amongst all methane traits with RME most highly associated with (r=0.86) DME. MY and MI were correlated (P<0.05) with DMI, growth, feed efficiency and carcass output. High RME had lower (P<0.05) ruminal propionate compared to low RME animals and increased (P<0.05) butyrate compared to medium and low RME animals. Propionate was negatively associated (P<0.05) with all methane traits. Greater acetate:propionate ratio was associated with higher RME (r=0.18; P<0.05). Under the ad libitum feeding regime deployed here, RME was the best predictor of DME and only methane trait independent of animal productivity. Ranking animals on RME presents the opportunity to exploit inter animal variation in enteric emissions as well as providing a more equitable index of the methanogenic potential of an animal on which to investigate the underlying biological regulatory mechanisms.

Rumen methanogenesis results in the loss of 6% to 10% of gross energy intake in cattle and globally is the single most significant source of anthropogenic methane (CH4) emissions. The purpose of this study was to analyse greenhouse gas traits recorded in a commercial feedlot unit to gain an understanding into the relationships between greenhouse gas traits and production traits. Methane and carbon dioxide (CO2) data recorded via multiple GreenFeed Emission Monitoring (GEM) systems as well as feed intake, live weight, ultrasound scanning data and slaughter data were available on 1099 animals destined for beef production, of which 648 were steers, 361 were heifers and 90 were bulls. Phenotypic relationships between GEM emission measurements with feed intake, weight traits, muscle ultrasound data and carcass traits were estimated. Utilisation of GEM systems, daily patterns of methane output and repeatability of GEM system measurements across averaging periods were also assessed. Methane concentrations varied with visit number, duration and time of day of visit to the GEM system. Mean CH4 and CO2 varied between sex, with mean CH4 of 256.1 g/day ± 64.23 for steers, 234.7 g/day ± 59.46 for heifers and 156.9 g/day ± 55.98 for young bulls. A 10-day average period of GEM system measurements were required for steers and heifers to achieve a minimum repeatability of 0.60, however, higher levels of repeatability were observed in animals that attended the GEM system more frequently. In contrast, CO2 emissions reached repeatability estimates >0.6 for steers and heifers in all averaging periods greater than 2-day, suggesting that cattle have a moderately consistent CO2 emission pattern across time periods. Animals with heavier bodyweights were observed to have higher levels of CH4 (correlation = 0.30) and CO2 production (correlation = 0.61), and when assessing direct methane, higher levels of dry matter intake were associated with higher methane output (correlation = 0.31). Results suggest that reducing CH4 can have a negative impact on growth and body composition of cattle. Methane ratio traits, such as methane yield and intensity were also evaluated, and whilst easy to understand and compare across populations, ratio traits are undesirable in animal breeding, due to the unpredictable level of response. Methane adjusted for dry matter intake and liveweight (Residual CH4), should be considered as an alternative emission trait when selecting for reduced emissions within breeding goals.

Nitrogen (N) use efficiency in beef cattle is low (10–20%), resulting in large amounts of N excreted into the environment. The objective of this study was to evaluate the effects of chitosan inclusion and dietary crude protein (CP) level on nutrient intake and digestibility, ruminal fermentation, and N excretion in beef heifers. Eight Belgian Blue × Holstein Friesian cross beef heifers (752 ± 52 kg BW) were used in a 4 × 4 Latin square with a 2 × 2 factorial design. Factors were dietary CP concentration—high CP, 16% (HP) or low CP, 12% (LP)—and chitosan inclusion—0 or 10 g kg−1 dry matter (DM) offered at 50:50 forage concentrate ratio on a dry matter (DM) basis. Apparent total tract digestibility of DM, organic matter (OM), and CP were reduced (p < 0.001) with chitosan inclusion, whereas offering the HP diets increased apparent total tract digestibility of CP (p < 0.001). Offering the HP diets increased urinary N excretion (p < 0.001), while chitosan inclusion increased N excretion in faeces (p < 0.05). Ruminal pH was increased with chitosan inclusion (p < 0.01). There was a CP × chitosan interaction for rumen ammonia (NH3) concentrations (p < 0.05). Including chitosan in the HP diets increased ruminal NH3 concentration while having no effect on the LP diets. Urinary N excretion was increased with increased levels of CP, but chitosan inclusion increased the quantity of N excreted in the faeces.

Inclusion of the red seaweed Asparagopsis taxiformis as a feed additive, has led to significant reductions in methane (CH4) production from ruminants. However, dietary supplementation with this seaweed is negatively associated with health and environmental concerns mainly due to its bromoform content, a compound with potential carcinogenic properties. Thus, there is renewed focus on ascertaining the anti-methanogenic potential of locally grown brown and green seaweeds, which typically do not contain bromoform. The objective of this study was to investigate the effects of selected brown and green seaweeds on diet digestibility, ruminal fermentation patterns, total gas (TGP) and CH4 production in vitro, using the rumen simulation technique system. In experiment 1, Pelvetia canaliculata (PEC) was examined. In experiment 2, Cystoseira tamariscifolia (CYT), Bifurcaria bifurcata (BIB), Fucus vesiculosus (FUV), Himanthalia elongata (HIM) and Ulva intestinalis (ULI) were analysed. Ascophyllum nodosum (ASC) was included in both experiments. A diet containing A. taxiformis (ASP1; ASP2) and an unsupplemented diet (CON) were included as positive and negative controls, respectively in both experiments. All seaweeds were included at a rate of 10 g/kg dry matter (DM) into a control diet of 50:50 (w:w) forage:concentrate. The seven brown and green seaweeds assessed failed to affect absolute CH4 emissions or alter fermentation patterns. In experiment 1, seaweed treatment had no effect on diet digestibility, CH4%, CH4 mmol/d or CH4 L/d (P&gt;0.1), however ASP1 reduced CH4 mmol/g DOM by 49% (P&lt;0.01) relative to the control. Both ASC and ASP1 tended to increase TGP (P&lt;0.1) relative to the control. In addition to this, the inclusion of seaweed in experiment 1 reduced the production of NH3-N (P&lt;.0001) compared to the control. In experiment 2, seaweed treatment had no effect on diet digestibility or TGP. Both ASP2 and FUV reduced CH4% (P&lt;0.01) but only ASP2 significantly reduced CH4 mmol/d, CH4 L/d and CH4 mmol/g DOM (P&lt;0.05). Daily mMol butyrate was reduced by ASP2 relative to the control and most other seaweeds (P&lt;.0001). In both experiment 1 and 2, seaweed inclusion had no effect on daily total VFA, acetate or propionate production or the acetate:propionate ratio relative to the control. To conclude, including the bromoform-free brown and green seaweeds at 10g/kg DM has no negative effects on diet digestibility or fermentation patterns but also failed to reduce the production of enteric CH4in vitro.

The efficiency of Ireland’s grass-based livestock systems can be attributed to high outputs, low production costs and a low carbon footprint relative to housed systems. Methane (CH4) is a potent greenhouse gas (GHG) of which enteric fermentation from livestock production is a key source, being directly responsible for 57% of Irish agricultural GHG emissions. There are a number of strategies including dietary manipulation and breeding initiatives that have shown promising results as potential mitigation solutions for ruminant livestock production. However, the majority of international research has predominantly been conducted on confined systems. Given the economic viability of Irish livestock systems, it is vital that any mitigation methods are assessed at pasture. Such research cannot be completed without access to suitable equipment for measuring CH4 emissions at grazing. This review documents the current knowledge capacity in Ireland (publications and projects) and includes an inventory of equipment currently available to conduct research. A number of strategic research avenues are identified herein that warrant further investigation including breeding initiatives and dietary manipulation. It was notable that enteric CH4 research seems to be lacking in Ireland as it constituted 14% of Irish agricultural GHG research publications from 2016 to 2021. A number of key infrastructural deficits were identified including respiration chambers (there are none currently operational in the Republic of Ireland) and an urgent need for more pasture-based GreenFeed™ systems. These deficits will need to be addressed to enable inventory refinement, research progression and the development of effective solutions to enteric CH4 abatement in Ireland.

Chitosan (N-acetyl-D-glucosamine polymer) is a natural biopolymer, which is the second most abundant organic compound on earth, found in lower plants and some arthropods and crustaceans. Studies with ruminants have shown that supplementing with chitosan can alter ruminal fermentation, including higher propionate concentration and lower acetate to propionate ratio, improving the energy efficiency within the rumen though data on nitrogen metabolism is lacking. Therefore, the objective of this study was to evaluate the effects of chitosan with different dietary crude protein (CP) inclusion on rumen fermentation in beef heifers. Eight ruminally cannulated Belgian Blue x Holstein Friesian heifers (752 ± 52Kg BW) were allocated one of four dietary treatments in a 2 x 2 factorial Latin Square design (n = 8). Diets were offered as total mixed ration (TMR) consisting of grass silage plus concentrate. Diets were offered once daily ad libitum. Dietary treatments were as follows: high CP (16%) +/- chitosan (10g kg-1 DMI) supplementation (HP+) or (HP-) and low CP (12%) +/- chitosan supplementation (LP+) or (LP-). Experimental periods were 25d in duration (14 d dietary adaptation and 10 d sampling). Rumen fluid was collected via cannula every 2 h post feeding for analysis of ruminal pH, ammonia (NH3) and volatile fatty acids (VFA) over a 48-hour period. Data was analysed using Proc Mixed procedure in SAS. Significant differences were considered when P &lt; 0.05. Dietary treatment had no effect on ruminal pH (P &gt; 0.05). Chitosan supplementation had no effect on ruminal NH3 and VFA concentrations (P &gt; 0.05), whereas, animals offered 16% CP had higher concentrations of ruminal NH3 (P &lt; 0.001). In conclusion, supplementing a TMR diet fed to beef heifers with chitosan had no effect on rumen fermentation. However, reducing dietary CP concentration fed to beef animals resulted in lower rumen NH3 concentrations.
