-089Lewis Acid Catalysis of Photochemical Reactions. Part 11. Conformations, Spectroscopy, and Photochemistry of Methyl Phenanthrene-9-carboxylate, Phenanthrene-9-carboxamides, and Their Lewis Acid Complexes.-The photochemical behavior of the title compounds (I) in the absence and presence of strong Lewis acids is investigated. Both the phenanthrenes and their complexes are strongly fluorescent. Equilibrium constants for complex formation are determined. Lewis acid complexation is found to have a pronounced effect on ground-state conformation, photophysical behavior and photochemical reactivity. Significant is the decrease in singlet lifetime for boron halide complexes, which is attributed to a heavy-atom effect on the nonradiative decay rate constant. -(LEWIS, F. D.; BARANCYK, S.
