This position paper presents the state-of-the art of the field of workplace commitment. Yet, for workplace commitment to stay relevant, it is necessary to look beyond current practice and to extrapolate trends to envision what will be needed in future research. Therefore, the aim of this paper is twofold, first, to consolidate our current understanding of workplace commitment in contemporary work settings and, second, to look into the future by identifying and discussing avenues for future research. Representative of the changing nature of work, we explicitly conceptualize workplace commitment in reference to (A) "Temporary work", and (B) "Cross-boundary work". Progressing from these two themes, conceptual, theoretical and methodological advances of the field are discussed. The result is the identification of 10 key paths of research to pursues, a shared agenda for the most promising and needed directions for future research and recommendations for how these will translate into practice.

This study examined the impact of perceived high‐involvement work practices on job demands (role conflict, role overload and role ambiguity) and burnout (emotional exhaustion and depersonalisation). The study was conducted in a Canadian general hospital. Findings from structural equation modelling (N = 545) revealed that perceived HIWPs were significantly and negatively related to job demands and burnout. Role conflict and role overload have a significant positive association with emotional exhaustion and depersonalisation. Finally, role conflict and role overload partially mediate the relationship between perceived HIWPs and burnout. We discuss the theoretical and managerial implications of these findings for our understanding of how HIWPs influence the job demands and burnout of employees.
There is a worldwide shortage of nurses. From a nurse training perspective, it is important to create realistic perceptions of the nursing role. In hospitals, providing a good work environment and resources conducive to their professional ethos is critical for ensuring nurses do not leave the profession early on in their careers.
This study investigated the impact of employee perceptions of high-involvement work practices (HIWPs) on employee burnout. It further tested the proposition that the recovery experience of psychological detachment would moderate the HIWPs-burnout link. The proposed model was tested among a sample of nurses and midwives (N=1,135) in Ireland. The results showed that, as hypothesized, employees' perceptions of HIWPs were associated with lower levels of burnout. Furthermore, psychological detachment moderated the relationship between HIWPs and burnout such that the negative HIWPs-burnout relationship was more pronounced for participants with high compared to low levels of psychological detachment. This study contributes to the HRM and occupational health psychology literature by taking a contingency perspective to understand when the positive effects of HIWPs can be enhanced or undermined.
