Energy efficiency measures (ECMs) and indoor air quality (IAQ) have different goals, but often have overlapping results; sometimes good, sometimes bad. Many ECMs have potential IAQ complications; conversely many IAQ improvement measures increase energy use. The two are inseparable and competing, so the best overall outcome involves a careful balance. This article illustrates some examples of the overlap between energy and air quality, and provide examples of activities that can spoil the delicate balance between them.
scite is a Brooklyn-based organization that helps researchers better discover and understand research articles through Smart Citations–citations that display the context of the citation and describe whether the article provides supporting or contrasting evidence. scite is used by students and researchers from around the world and is funded in part by the National Science Foundation and the National Institute on Drug Abuse of the National Institutes of Health.
