This paper examines how the Bulgars perceived Byzantine Christianity in the period before their conversion to Christianity in 864. It tries to establish a connection between literacy, population, kingship, and religion. The Bulgars' attitude toward the 'god of the Greeks' is examined against the background of the impact of Christian versus Pagan in Bulgaria and the specific Bulgar usage of elements of Byzantine Greek literacy and ideology.
