1. The production of food for human consumption has led to an historical and global conflict with terrestrial carnivores, which in turn has resulted in the extinction or extirpation of many species, although some have benefited. At present, carnivores affect food production by: (i) killing human producers; killing and/or eating (ii) fish/shellfish; (iii) game/wildfowl; (iv) livestock; (v) damaging crops; (vi) transmitting diseases; and (vii) through trophic interactions with other species in agricultural landscapes. Conversely, carnivores can themselves be a source of dietary protein (bushmeat). 2. Globally, the major areas of conflict are predation on livestock and the transmission of rabies. At a broad scale, livestock predation is a customary problem where predators are present and has been quantified for a broad range of carnivore species, although the veracity of these estimates is equivocal. Typically, but not always, losses are small relative to the numbers held, but can be a significant proportion of total livestock mortality. Losses experienced by producers are often highly variable, indicating that factors such as husbandry practices and predator behaviour may significantly affect the relative vulnerability of properties in the wider landscape. Within livestock herds, juvenile animals are particularly vulnerable. 3. Proactive and reactive culling are widely practised as a means to limit predation on livestock and game. Historic changes in species' distributions and abundance illustrate that culling programmes can be very effective at reducing predator density, although such substantive impacts are generally considered undesirable for native predators. However, despite their prevalence, the effectiveness, efficiency and the benefit:cost ratio of culling programmes have been poorly studied. 4. A wide range of non-lethal methods to limit predation has been studied. However, many of these have their practical limitations and are unlikely to be widely applicable. 5. Lethal approaches are likely to dominate the management of terrestrial carnivores for the foreseeable future, but animal welfare considerations are increasingly likely to influence management strategies. The adoption of non-lethal approaches will depend upon proof of their effectiveness and the willingness of stakeholders to implement them, and, in some cases, appropriate licensing and legislation. 6. Overall, it is apparent that we still understand relatively little about the importance of factors affecting predation on livestock and how to manage this conflict effectively. We consider the following avenues of research to be essential: (i) quantified assessments of the loss of viable livestock; (ii) landscape-level studies of contiguous properties to quantify losses associated with variables such as different husbandry practices; (iii) replicated experimental manipulations to identify the relative benefit of particular management practices, incorporating (iv) techniques to identify individual predators killing stock; and (v) economic analyses of...
These results indicate that multiplane TEE can provide an alternative method for the intraoperative measurement of CO. The ability of the rotatable imaging array to align with the left ventricular outflow tract and the need for only minimal adjustments in probe position advance the utility of intraoperative TEE.
Amid growing concern about keeping exotic species as companion animals, nonhuman primates have been highlighted as inappropriate for private ownership. However, there has been no comprehensive review of the suitability of primates as pets, using a framework such as Schuppli and Fraser's (2000). Schuppli and Fraser incorporate welfare of the individual, of others, and of the environment. This article (a) examines the numbers, origins, ages, and ownership trends of primates kept as pets in the United Kingdom and (b) identifies a number of welfare, health, and environmental concerns. Overall, strong evidence supports the argument that primates are not suitable pets; it is unlikely that the welfare of pet primates can be adequately addressed in normal households. Finally, using unpublished data on complaints and inquiries received by the Royal Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals, the study assesses the degree of public concern about the welfare of primates kept as pets in England and Wales. The article identifies a wide range of concerns about keeping pet primates and concludes that this practice should end.
Capsule Lapwing nest predation was negatively correlated to nest density, while Lapwing alarm duration in response to foxes was positively correlated with the number of Lapwing broods present. Aims To identify factors affecting Lapwing nest predation and Red Fox search effort. Methods Lapwing nest success was monitored at four sites in 1996, seven sites in 1997 and six sites in 1998. In 1997 we mapped the position of all Lapwing nests in order to determine distances between nests, and the proximity of linear features and potential avian predator perches to each nest. From April to June 1998 we carried out 199 hours of nocturnal observations at six Lapwing nesting sites using night vision equipment. Results The risk of nest predation was significantly higher for more isolated nests. Nocturnal observations showed that of all the nocturnal predators, foxes were the most active at Lapwing nesting sites. However, fox search effort in Lapwing colonies was relatively low, averaging 57 s/ha per visit. Foxes spent significantly longer foraging near breeding Lapwings (measured as duration of alarm calls) when more broods were present. Fox search effort (s/ha per hour of observation) tended to be greater in areas of high waterbird density. Conclusions The lack of positive density-dependent nest predation, the relatively low search effort of foxes near Lapwing nesting sites and the high nest success sometimes achieved in areas with foxes all suggest that Lapwing nest predation by foxes is 'incidental'. Lapwing chicks are probably more vulnerable to predation by foxes than clutches.
We investigated cardiovascular performance in 12 patients (mean age 66 +/- 12 yr) with significant coexisting cardiopulmonary disease (hypertension, coronary artery disease, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease) during laparoscopic colectomy under general anesthesia. Hemodynamic monitors included arterial and pulmonary artery catheters in combination with transesophageal echocardiography. Hemodynamic and echocardiographic data were obtained at five epochs: baseline (after induction of anesthesia), insufflation (after pneumoperitoneum, supine position), Trendelenburg 5 (5 min after placement into Trendelenburg's position), Trendelenburg 20 (at 20 min in Trendelenburg's position), and end (after release of the pneumoperitoneum, supine position). Hemodynamic responses to peritoneal insufflation resulted in significant increases in systemic vascular resistance (SVR) as well as endsystolic area (ESA) and significant decreases in cardiac index (CI) and ejection fraction area (EFa) compared with baseline. Trendelenburg's positioning augmented ventricular preload and performance, resulting in significant increases in pulmonary capillary wedge pressure, CI, end-diastolic area, and EFa compared with insufflation. At the final epoch, end, a hyperdynamic state occurred as evidenced by a significantly decreased ESA and SVR while heart rate, CI, and EFa increased significantly compared to baseline and insufflation. In an elderly population with significant coexisting cardiopulmonary disease, intraoperative maneuvers required for laparoscopic colectomy resulted in previously undescribed alterations of cardiovascular performance, which persisted after release of the pneumoperitoneum.
