Benzothiadiazole (BTH), as Bion WG50, and acetylsalicylic acid (ASA) treatments of potato foliage of field-and glasshouse-grown potato plants were compared for control of two foliar diseases, early blight ( Alternaria solani ) and powdery mildew ( Erysiphe cichoracearum ). The effect of these treatments on harvested tubers wound-inoculated with the dry rot fungus ( Fusarium semitectum ) was also evaluated. BTH (50 mg a.i. L − 1 ) gave almost complete control of both foliar pathogens on inoculated glasshouse-grown plants and reduced the severity of leaf spotting diseases (mainly early blight) in the field. BTH (100 mg a.i. L − 1 ) and ASA (400 mg a.i. L − 1 ) reduced the severity of dry rot in field-grown tubers in some post-harvest wound-inoculated treatments but not others and a similar reduction occurred with tubers inoculated post-harvest from BTH-treated plants grown under glasshouse conditions. BTH treatment increased β -1,3-glucanase activity in leaves > stem > tubers > stolons but not in roots. Increased enzyme activity was recorded for up to 45 days post-treatment.
for the Western WA COVID-19 Expert Panel BACKGROUND: Washington State experienced the first major outbreak of COVID-19 in the US and despite a significant number of cases, has seen a relatively low death rate per million population compared with other states with major outbreaks, and has seen a substantial decrease in the projections for healthcare use, that is, "flattening the curve." This consensus report seeks to identify the key factors contributing to the effective health system disaster response in western WA. METHODS:A multidisciplinary, expert panel including individuals and organizations who were integral to managing the public health and emergency healthcare system response were engaged in a consensus process to identify the key themes and lessons learned and develop recommendations for ongoing management of the COVID-19 pandemic. RESULTS:Six key themes were identified, including early communication and coordination among stakeholders; regional coordination of the healthcare system response; rapid development and access to viral testing; proactive management of long-term care and skilled nursing facilities; proactive management of vulnerable populations; and effective physical distancing in the community. CONCLUSIONS: Based on the lessons learned in each of the areas identified by the panel, 11 recommendations are provided to support the healthcare system disaster response in managing future outbreaks.
ReTain plant growth regulator is a commercial formulation of aminoethoxyvinylglycine (AVG). This compound is known to competitively inhibit the activity of the enzyme ACC (1-aminocyclopropanecarboxylate) synthase which is the rate limiting enzyme in the ethylene biosynthesis pathway. By inhibiting the activity of ACC synthase, ethylene-mediated ripening processes can be delayed.'Tegan Blue' plums have low ethylene production, which indicates that it is a suppressed climacteric variety. There was a significant difference between the ReTain treated and untreated fruit for the second harvest, this difference was greater later in storage than early in storage. The results indicate that there is a postharvest benefit achieved after applying AVG to 'Tegan Blue' plums. The main advantage is in the maintenance of firmness for late-harvested fruit. Other benefits are the suppression of ethylene production and the development of a more intense colour.
