Compared to the national reaction of fear and avoidance of mental illness only a few years ago, respondents in a black middle‐class community displayed enlightened attitudes. The sizeable number of households with members treated for recent symptoms of emotional distress utilized medical rather than nonmedical sources of help in nearly all cases.
