11 SommaireAu sein de la société actuelle, la sédentarité a des conséquences négatives sur la santé des individus dont l'augmentation de l'obésité. D'un autre côté, les images de corps parfaits et minces sont valorisées et provoquent chez certaines personnes, en particulier les femmes, une obsession de la minceur. La présente étude avait comme objectif général d'identifier les effets de l'exercice physique sur l'image que les femmes ont d'elles-mêmes ainsi que sur leur bien-être psychologique et physique. A cet effet, des entrevues semi-dirigées ont été réalisées dans la région du Saguenay auprès de dix femmes qui présentaient un surplus de poids ou de l'obésité et qui avaient décidé d'entreprendre un programme d'exercice physique à raison de trois fois par semaine pendant trente minutes. Cette étude visait trois objectifs spécifiques: 1) identifier la perception de l'image de soi chez les femmes ayant un surplus de poids; 2) exposer les principaux motifs qui poussent les femmes à débuter un programme d'activité physique; 3) identifier les retombées de l'activité physique sur le bien-être psychologique et physique ainsi que sur la vie personnelle et sociale des femmes. Cette étude, reposant sur la théorie de la comparaison sociale de Festinger (1954) et la théorie de l'autodétermination de Deci et Ryan (1991), révèle que les participantes ont une image négative de leur corps provoquée par la comparaison sociale et que les motifs pour commencer l'exercice sont engendrés par une motivation de type extrinsèque comme le désir de perdre du poids. L'image de la femme véhiculée dans la société et les icônes de beauté présentés dans les médias affectent l'appréciation que les répondantes ont de l'image de leur propre corps et cela engendre des frustrations. La totalité des répondantes ont mentionné ressentir des inconforts avec leur poids corporel qui affectent leur estime de soi, leur perception de soi, leurs relations sociales et professionnelles ainsi que leurs relations amoureuses et sexuelles. Concernant les motivations à commencer l'exercice physique, les répondantes ont toutes affirmé que le principal motif est le désir de perdre du poids. Après trois mois de pratique de l'exercice physique, presque la moitié des participantes affirmaient avoir atteint ou partiellement atteint leurs objectifs puisqu'elles avaient perdu du poids. Les résultats de l'étude démontrent d'ailleurs que chez la majorité des répondantes, l'exercice physique a opéré des retombées positives sur le poids corporel, le pourcentage de gras, l'indice de masse corporelle et sur les mensurations corporelles. Les participantes remarquent aussi une amélioration de leur état de santé, une meilleure qualité du sommeil et la presque totalité des femmes disent avoir adopté de meilleures habitudes alimentaires.
