RÉSUMÉ Lorsqu’en septembre 1589, les habitants de la ville de Grenoble optèrent pour la Ligue, le parlement du Dauphiné, qui résidait dans ses murs, refusa de se joindre à leur union sans pour autant reconnaître Henri IV comme souverain légitime. Sous la direction du premier président Ennemond Rabot d’Illins (un homme de loi travaillé par des angoisses eschatologiques et pétri de lettres classiques), les parlementaires tentèrent d’ouvrir une voie médiane qui prétendait se situer en dehors des partis : ni pour la Ligue ni pour le roi. Ces « moyenneurs », inspirés par La République de Platon, eurent pour ambition de sauvegarder l’ordre et la paix dans une province menacée par le chaos, en maintenant envers et contre tous le fonctionnement de la justice. Mais l’utopie des moyenneurs se solda par un échec. Isolé et pris entre deux feux, le parlement finit par éclater, se partageant à son tour en ligueurs et royaux. Toutefois, cette expérience avait permis de maintenir le dialogue entre les belligérants, le parlement ayant joué le rôle modérateur d’arbitre et de médiateur.

Symboles identitaires de l’autonomie urbaine, elles donnaient également une force particulière à l’expression du loyalisme des notables de la cité à l’égard du souverain. Cependant, la disparition d’Henri III,en 1589,transforma ces sages instruments d’obéissance en redoutables foyers de dissidence. De retour dans le giron royal, les assemblées, composées essentiellement d’ex-ligueurs, se muèrent en groupes de pression capables de faire obstacle à la réintégration politique des protestants, ne cédant, au début du XVIIesiècle, qu’au prix de leur propre déclin.
