Trente ans après son identification par P. Gouletquer dans le Finistère, le groupe de Bertheaume doit faire l’objet d’un nouvel examen, fondé sur des fouilles récentes. Trois dates par le radiocarbone ont été obtenues sur les sites du Bilou au Conquet, de Quillien au Cloître-Saint-Thégonnec et de Toul-an-Naouc’h à Plougoulm, mais il est à craindre que leur regroupement à la charnière des IXe et VIIIe millénaires av. J.-C. soit le résultat d’une limite de la méthode de datation par le radiocarbone. Observé au moins dans tout le Nord-Ouest de la France, ce phénomène serait lié à un effet de plateau visible sur la courbe de calibration. La prétendue charnière Mésolithique ancien/ Mésolithique moyen, qui concerne tant de sites et que l’on retrouve dans toute la littérature sur le sujet, serait donc un artefact de la recherche. Le groupe de Bertheaume, s’il ne peut donc être organisé chronologiquement, offre en revanche des caractères stylistiques et techniques bien particuliers, qui le distinguent de ses voisins orientaux. Si les rapprochements avec le Sauveterrien stricto sensu sont toujours remarqués, il nous semble que la nature des analogies doive être reconsidérée. Des effets de convergence technique et d’influences croisées viennent contrebalancer les hypothèses strictement diffusionnistes ou les annexions pures et simples.
Le projet de construction d'une station d'épuration à la périphérie de Rennes a offert aux archéologues l'opportunité d'étudier les occupations anciennes des rives de la Vilaine. C'est ainsi qu'ont été successivement reconnues des fréquentations du site au Mésolithique, au Néolithique, puis à l'Age du Bronze, au deuxième Age du Fer, ainsi qu'au haut Moyen Age et à la période post-médiévale. L'ensemble le plus intéressant, mais aussi le mieux conservé, était celui appartenant à La Tène moyenne, matérialisé par un système d'enclos en symbiose avec son milieu. Ce dernier a livré un corpus céramique important, appelé i devenir une référence pour le bassin rennais. On a pu noter, enfin, que la stabilisation des habitats était véritablement conditionnée par les fluctuations du fleuve, elles-mêmes témoins des changements climatiques ou de l'action humaine sur son environnement.
