Der vorliegende Band vereinigt verschiedene Gastvorträge, die im Rahmen des Projekts „Der auktoriale Diskurs in vergleichender Sicht“ am Zentrum für Literaturforschung in Berlin gehalten wurden, mit Beiträgen der Mitarbeiter dieses „interphilologisch angelegten“ (S. XXIV), nämlich mehrere Nationalliteraturen vergleichend betrachtenden Forschungsprojekts. Hierbei sind vor allem die deutsche, englische, französische und die russische Literatur gemeint; andere kommen nur am Rande vor. Der vergleichende Ansatz eröffnet einen weiteren Blick auf die seit den 1960er Jahren kontrovers diskutierte Instanz des literarischen Autors und seine verschiedenen Ausprägungen. Mitherausgeber Städtke resümiert in der Einleitung den Stand der Diskussion und das zentrale Paradox des literarischen Autors (de facto ist hier fast nur von Prosaautoren die Rede) zwischen maximaler Autonomie und maximaler Heteronomie.
