Theory and practice of media education has shown during its development several functions, such as the protection against deviant symptoms in the media (e.g. cinema) or the training of operational skills (e.g. for Information technologies). This ambiguous character of media education which is up to now not clearified due to historical reasons is brought into the centre of the articie, which in its mainstream portrays the various interdependencies of different subjects and the institutional form of the subject "media pedagogy" in current higher education. In the context ofnew media technologies the articie illustrates that media pedagogy has to be considered as a unity of media didactics and media education. Therefore, media pedagogy should not restrict its critical and informative functionfor political and economic reasons; this aspect will serve as a benefit to its didactical and instrumental orientation.
