BackgroundAlcohol misuse ranks within the top ten health conditions with the highest global burden of disease. Low-intensity, Internet interventions for curbing adult alcohol misuse have been shown effective. Few meta-analyses have been carried out, however, and they have involved small numbers of studies, lacked indicators of drinking within low risk guidelines, and examined the effectiveness of unguided self-help only. We therefore conducted a more thorough meta-analysis that included both guided and unguided interventions.MethodsSystematic literature searches were performed up to September 2013. Primary outcome was the mean level of alcohol consumption and drinking within low risk guidelines for alcohol consumption at post-treatment.FindingsWe selected 16 randomised controlled trials (with 23 comparisons and 5,612 participants) for inclusion. Results, showed a small but significant overall effect size in favour of Internet interventions (g = 0.20, 95% CI: 0.13–0.27, p<.001). Participants in Internet interventions drunk on average 22 grams of ethanol less than controls and were significantly more likely to be adhering to low-risk drinking guidelines at post-treatment (RD 0.13, 95% CI: 0.09–0.17, p<.001). Subgroup analyses revealed no significant differences in potential moderators for the outcome of alcohol consumption, although there was a near-significant difference between comparisons with waitlist control and those with assessment-only or alcohol information control conditions (p = .056).ConclusionsInternet interventions are effective in reducing adult alcohol consumption and inducing alcohol users to adhere to guidelines for low-risk drinking. This effect is small but from a public health point of view this may warrant large scale implementation at low cost of Internet interventions for adult alcohol misuse. Moderator analyses with sufficient power are, however, needed in order to assess the robustness of these overall results and to assess whether these interventions may impact on subgroups with different levels of success.

A variety of metamodeling techniques have been developed in the past decade to reduce the computational expense of computer-based analysis and simulation codes. Metamodeling is the process of building a “model of a model” to provide a fast surrogate for a computationally expensive computer code. Common metamodeling techniques include response surface methodology, kriging, radial basis functions, and multivariate adaptive regression splines. In this paper, we investigate support vector regression (SVR) as an alternative technique for approximating complex engineering analyses. The computationally efficient theory behind SVR is reviewed, and SVR approximations are compared against the aforementioned four metamodeling techniques using a test bed of 26 engineering analysis functions. SVR achieves more accurate and more robust function approximations than the four metamodeling techniques, and shows great potential for metamodeling applications, adding to the growing body of promising empirical performance of SVR.

Driving a car is a highly visual task. Despite the trend towards increased driver assistance and autonomous vehicles, drivers still need to interact with the car for both driving and non-driving relevant tasks, at times simultaneously. The often-resulting high cognitive load is a safety issue, which can be addressed by providing the driver with alternative feedback modalities, such as haptics. Recent trends in the automotive industry are moving towards the seamless integration of control elements through touch-sensitive surfaces. Psychological knowledge on optimally utilizing haptic technologies remains limited. The literature on automotive haptic feedback consists mainly of singular findings without putting them into a broader user context with respect to haptic design of interfaces. Moreover, haptic feedback has primarily been limited to the confirmation of control actions rather than the searching or finding of control elements, the latter of which becomes particularly important considering the current trends. This paper presents an integrated framework on haptic processing in automotive user interfaces and provides guidelines for haptic design of user interfaces in car interiors.

Telepresent tasks involve removal of the human operator from an immediate working area and relocation to a remote environment that offers the operator all necessary control features. In this remote location, the operator must be provided with adequate feedback information such that the task at hand can be effectively executed. This research explores the effectiveness of various feedback methods. More specifically, graphical feedback in the form of video streamed images is compared against rendered 3D models, the overall effectiveness of haptic feedback is analyzed, and the influences of sensory augmentation and sensory substitution are examined. This study involved 48 participants, each of whom executed a simple clockwork assembly task under various feedback mechanisms. The results support the use of 3D models as opposed to live video streams for graphical presentation, utilization of haptic feedback (which was found to significantly enhance operation effectiveness), and the use of sensory augmentation and substitution under specific circumstances. IntroductionMicrosystems technology deals with manipulated objects that are less than 1 mm in size or for which an assembly accuracy of less than 200 m is required. This kind of miniaturization is becoming increasingly important for automotive, medical, and telecommunication components. Today, the assembly process of these components is faced with at least two major problems: the motor demand on the human operator is high due to the requirement of accurate results, and, to avoid any contamination, the human operator has to work in a clean room. Both factors are a threat to good working conditions and can be avoided through the use of telepresent technology. In telepresent operations, the assembly process is performed by a slave manipulator controlled by a human operator located in an external environment. This remote assembly changes several aspects of the working environment.First, the visual presentation as well as the operator's actions must be scaled such that the user gets an impression of being in a "normally" sized environment. The scaling is not the only parameter that has to be adapted at the operator end. The visual image can either be a camera-recorded real video stream or a rendered 3D model.
