Evolutionary theories of senescence postulate that lifespan is determined by the age-dependent decrease in the effects of natural selection. Factors that influence survival and reproduction at early life stages have a larger impact on fitness than factors that influence later life stages. According to these views, selection for rapid sexual maturation and a steep age-dependent decrease in fitness drive the evolution of short lifespans. Here, we report on the survival trajectory of Nothobranchius furzeri (Pisces: Ciprinodontidae): a member of a group of annual species found in temporary bodies of water whose life expectancy in the wild is limited to a few months. We find that maximum survival of N. furzeri in the laboratory is less than 12 weeks. The temporal trajectory of survival shows an agedependent increase in the mortality rate that is typical of organisms with defined lifespans. The lifespan of N. furzeri is exceptionally short for a vertebrate: owing to its small size and the possibility of propagation in captivity, N. furzeri could be used as a convenient model for ageing research.

Populations of annual killifishes persist in temporary water bodies over the dry season through the expression of diapause in their drought-resistant embryos. Environmental cues may influence expression of the diapause phenotype during embryonic incubation. Millerichthys robustus is the only annual killifish distributed in North America. The aim of this review is to analyze the ecology of M. robustus development and contrast this with that of annual killifishes in austral locations. The temporary water bodies inhabited by M. robustus present the following environmental conditions: flood, drought, and humidity. During the flooding period, the environment presents the lowest temperatures, shortest photoperiod, and highest precipitation, and embryos were found in diapause I. The drought period features the highest temperatures and lowest precipitation, and embryos were found in diapause II. In contrast, during the humid period at the beginning of the rainy season, embryos were found in diapause I, II, and III, associated with the longer photoperiod and high temperatures. These dynamics of the diapause phenotypes can be explained by a combination of the strategies of phenotypic plasticity during flood and drought periods, and bet-hedging during the humid period. The census of natural populations provides relevant information for both conservation purposes and environmental monitoring. In the present work, natural populations of the killifish Aphanius fasciatus (Teleostei: Cyprinodontidae) were censused in the Italian territory. The historical distribution of the species was reconstructed with the aid of bibliographic material and museal samples, in order to evaluate the extent of changes in its distribution. Three periods (pre-1990s, 1990s, post-1990s) and five habitat types (lagoons/coastal ponds, saltworks, canals, river mouths, inland water bodies) were considered. Overall, we recorded the presence of A. fasciatus in 82 localities, the majority of which are lagoons/ponds. The species showed a widespread decline and sometimes local population extinction, due to habitat degradation and competition with the introduced poeciliid Gambusia holbrooki. With a few exceptions, A. fasciatus is currently extinct in inland waters, being mainly present in coastal brackish-water habitats. The occurrence of stable populations along the central Tyrrhenian, northern Adriatic, Sardinian and Apulian coastal biotopes is confirmed. The populations of Sicilian inland waters, considered extinct, showed recovery capabilities. In northern Tuscany, where the species was also considered extinct, there are also recent records. From a temporal perspective, the present work shows that A. fasciatus experienced population reductions throughout its range in the 1990s, when the species appeared locally extinct, or strongly rarefied, in several localities. Since then, the species recovered in the majority of the native range. However, careful monitoring is needed in order to control the effects of habitat alterations and competition with G. holbrooki on natural populations of A. fasciatus. Given the importance of brackish-water habitats as both biodiversity hotspots and buffer areas against rainfalls and floods, A. fasciatus may be raised to the status of "umbrella species" with regard to these habitats.

Killifishes are widely distributed across the globe and have successfully colonized a range of habitats, from coastal lagoons to rivers, streams, seasonal water ponds, as well as remote tropical islands, such as the Seychelles (Murphy & Collier, 1997). While annual killifish can colonize arid savanna environments by virtue of their desiccation-resistant embryos that can sustain life during monthslong dry seasons (Cellerino et al., 2016;Dolfi et al., 2019;Hu et al., 2020), we know little about the biotic and abiotic factors that enabled killifish to colonize and adapt in islands that are hundreds of kilometres distant from the mainland, such as Madagascar and the Seychelles.

Commentary and discussion on a recent paper promoting the use of Nothobranchius guentheri, a small African annual fish from the Island of Zanzibar as a tool to control mosquito larvae in temporary bodies of freshwater throughout Africa is presented.Arguments on major points; (1) expected low success of annual fish introductions, (2) low success of mosquito control in the field, (3) ecological threats, and (4) ethical issues are detailed.Despite serious problems with mosquito-borne diseases in tropical Africa and elsewhere, we encourage responsible means of biological control of parasite vectors. We show that effectiveness of Nothobranchius translocations is low (the previous attempts failed), likelihood of effective mosquito larvae control under field condition is negligible and ecological threats from Nothobranchius translocations from within and outside the naturally occurring range are serious. We advocate against the proposed next step of the project, i.e. field trials in Tanzania.

Aphanius almiriensis is the first time reported from Italy, where it occurs in the Palude del Capitano. The newly found population agree with Greek A. almiriensis in molecular (COI) and morphological characters. Aphanius almiriensis might be native to the the Palude del Capitano, which is outside from the species known range in the Aegean Sea basin. It might also have been imported with goods from the eastern Aegean in the late Republican age and the late Imperial period. The diagnostic morphological characters as well as the distribution and conservation status of A. almiriensis is discussed. A distribution map and associated, georeferenced database of A. almiriensis as well as of A. fasciatus are presented.

Molecular and morphological data were used to explore evolutionary differentiation among populations of Nothobranchius in the Lake Malawi-upper Shire River and the Lakes Chilwa-Chiuta drainage systems in Malawi. The aim of the study was to test the hypothesis that Nothobranchius of the Malawi-Shire system constitute a separate evolutionary group from Nothobranchius kirki. Mitochondrial and nuclear sequence data show a strongly supported phylogenetic split into two monophyletic groups separating the Lake Malawi basin fish from N. kirki. Unlike N. kirki, Lake Malawi-Shire fish do not deviate from neutrality and express an excess of rare haplotypes and mutations in terminal branches, characteristic of recently expanded populations. Further, the two groups significantly differ in morphology. Two body characters (dorsal-fin base length and pre-pelvic-pre-anal distance) are significantly different between the two species in both sexes. Several other characters are significantly different in either male or female comparisons with respect to both standard and head lengths, and robust morphological differentiation is detected by multivariate analysis. The two groups are readily distinguished on the basis of male colouration, especially in scale centres and the caudal fin. On the basis of this differentiation at the molecular and morphological levels, in addition to colouration, the Lake Malawi-Shire fish are hereby formally recognized as constituting a new species, Nothobranchius wattersi. This distinction is in agreement with the geomorphologic and recent climatic history in the region.
