Possedere la terra, diventare un'élite. Osservazioni a partire dai casi di Megara Iblea e Selinunte Lo spunto di riflessione che intendo proporre riguarda modi e tempi della definizione delle aristocrazie nelle città coloniali con particolare attenzione per il ruolo svolto in questo processo da controllo, possesso e sfruttamento della terra. 1 Si tratta di osservazioni preliminari che meriteranno altrove più distesa trattazione, ma che obbligano comunque a chiarire anche qui alcuni presupposti generali, visto che da essi discende la successiva argomentazione.Resta a mio parere condivisibile, innanzitutto, un modello che riconosce nelle spedizioni coloniali di VIII secolo un'intenzione non strettamente privata o individuale, 2 ma già comunitaria, interpretata da un gruppo sociale reattivo, dotato di possibilità concrete, di saperi adatti e di un sistema di relazioni che si strutturano anche al di fuori dell'oikos. L'ottica delle fonti antiche privilegia un taglio per così dire retrospettivo, che amplifica tutto ciò che precede e legittima la spedizione e che conferisce alla ktisis un carattere puntuale: va invece sottolineata, ed è questo un secondo punto, la marcatura fortemente dinamica che accompagna e segue l'atto fondativo stabilendo nel tempo l'assetto della comunità dal punto di vista urbanistico, sociale e politico. 3 Lo sguardo, insomma, si deve spostare dal 'prima' al 'poi', evidenziando i processi che plasmano le nuove poleis in loco. 4 La valorizzazione dell'elemento processuale, ed è la terza premessa, non significa però esautorare del tutto il momento della fondazione vera e propria: la forte ritualizzazione delle pratiche fondative che riguardano santuari o edifici, la centralità dell'heroon dell'ecista, la sottolineatura della nozione di arche ben presente alla cultura greca in ogni suo aspetto consigliano di valorizzare il potenziale della ktisis non solo in ambito storico-intellettuale o religioso, 5 ma anche, ed è la cosa che qui soprattutto interessa, squisitamente sociale.
Seguendo in parallelo la vicenda personale di Antonino Salinas, primo professore di archeologia dell’Università di Palermo, e del Museo dell’Università si giunge al 1873, anno in cui Salinas diventa direttore della prestigiosa istituzione cittadina. La lettura della prolusione pronunciata in quell’occasione e, ancor più, delle guide da lui compilate permettono di cogliere l’immagine di un Museo che progressivamente si apre a opere medievali e moderne e a oggetti quotidiani, disegnando infine il profilo di un’istituzione destinata a divenire una sorta di enciclopedia e a recuperare la centralità della maggiore città dell’isola. Ma il Museo era soprattutto volto a testimoniare qualità e specificità delle arti siciliane, e a ribadire cosìuna identità regionale prima che nazionale, sulla scorta degli alterni e ambigui sentimenti verso l’Italia unita.
