RESUMOO envelhecimento populacional é um fato atual, universal e evolutivo, fazendo parte do processo de vida do ser humano. O objetivo é compreender quais são as causas e as possíveis consequências do consumo excessivo de álcool pela população da terceira idade na sociedade brasileira. Neste estudo utilizou-se uma revisão literária, com pesquisas em livros, artigos alocados em sites de credibilidade, dentre outros meios que abordavam o idoso e o alcoolismo. Compreender as limitações das pessoas idosas, seus aspectos fisiopsicológicos e sua vida em sociedade, principalmente na perspectiva familiar e laboral, são de suma importância para conseguir dar a elas longevidade com qualidade. O consumo excessivo de álcool por idosos pode estar relacionado ao abandono e a problemas de ordem econômica, pois a modificação pontual desta idade é a aposentadoria, que muda intensamente o ritmo de vida da pessoa. Palavras-chave:Álcool; Idosos; Qualidade de vida. ABSTRACTThe aging population is a current, universal and evolutionary fact, being part of the human life process. The general objective highlights the excessive consumption of alcohol among the elderly population in Brazilian society, as this practice accelerates mental aging. In this study a literary review was used, with researches in books, articles placed in sites of credibility, among other means that approached the elderly and alcoholism. Understanding the limitations of the elderly, their physiopsychological aspects and their life in society, especially from the family and work perspective, are of paramount importance in order to be able to give them longevity with quality. Excessive consumption of alcohol by the elderly may be related to abandonment and economic problems, since the specific modification of this age is retirement, which changes the life rhythm of the person intensely.
