Mehr als 200 Millionen Europäer haben bei der Europawahl 2019 ihre Stimme abgegeben. Die Wahlbeteiligung stieg damit gegenüber den Europawahlen 2014 um 8 Punkte auf 50,6%. Dies führte zu der höchsten Beteiligung seit 1994 und erstmals seit 1979 zu einer Umkehrung der Wahlbeteiligung. Dabei war es die Stimmabgabe junger und erstmaliger Wähler, die zu diesem Anstieg führte. Auf die Frage, welche Themen ihre Wahlentscheidung maßgeblich beeinflusst haben, wurden vor allem die Themen Wirtschaft und Wachstum sowie Klimawandel und Umweltschutz genannt. Doch schon knapp hundert Tage nach dem Amtsantritt der Europäischen Kommission breitete sich auch in Europa eine Pandemie aus, die sie vor weitere und neue Herausforderungen stellt.
