Der 21. Band des "E.T.A. Hoffmann-Jahrbuchs" enthält Aufsätze über einzelne Werke Hoffmanns: In den Blick genommen wird die "Nachricht von einem gebildeten jungen Mann" mit einer neuen Sicht des Affen Milo, aus editionsphilologischer Sicht geht es um den "Ritter Gluck", thematisiert werden die intertextuellen Bezüge des Nachtstücks "Ignaz Denner" sowie Fragen von Künstlertum und Katzenleben im "Kater Murr". Ein Beitrag würdigt das bildkünstlerische Werk Hoffmanns. Der Abdruck der zeitgenössischen Rezensionen über Hoffmanns Werke wird fortgesetzt. Einem umfangreichen Besprechungsteil folgen Mitteilungen der E.T.A. Hoffmann-Gesellschaft, u.a. mit Berichten über die Hoffmann-Pflege in Kaliningrad, eine Aufführung des "Tranks der Unsterblichkeit" in Erfurt, eine Ausstellung sowie die Verleihung der "E.T.A. Hoffmann-Medaille" in Bamberg.
Hoffmanns Œuvre, so zeigen es die Abhandlungen dieses Jahrbuchs, wirkt in die Gegenwart hinein – literarisch wie theoretisch. So lassen sich Katrin Rögglas Prosastücke mit dem Titel "Nachtsammlung" als Fortschreibung der "Nachtstücke" lesen. "Rat Krespel" diskutiert Mythen und Geschlechterverhältnisse im Sinne der Gender Studies, Hoffmanns Erzählung "Vampyrismus" speist sich intertextuell aus Traditionen, die Leser und Literaten von heute genauso faszinieren wie zu Hoffmanns Zeiten. Früh schon, in den 1830er Jahren, hat Hoffmann Spuren in der schwedischen Literatur hinterlassen, im 20. Jahrhundert dann die bildende Kunst Paul Klees und Oskar Schlemmers beeinflusst. Geradezu zeitlos hingegen mutet Hoffmanns zentrale Rolle in den Diskursen des Phantastischen und des Unheimlichen an.
Die jüngere Entwicklung der E.T.A. Hoffmann-Gesellschaft und ihr vielfältiges Engagement dokumentiert der Gesellschaftsteil. Hinzu kommen Laudatio und Dankesworte des E.T.A. Hoffmann-Medaillenträgers Peter Lachmann sowie die Dankesworte zur Verleihung des E.T.A. Hoffmann-Preises der Stadt Bamberg an die Bestsellerautorin Tanja Kinkel.
