I dette temanummeret lèt vi ei gruppe forskarar sleppe til og utforske konturane til det dei meiner er ei eiga, (post)moderne saernordisk «gotisk uhygge», med døme frå mange ulike sjangrar.Både «gotisk» og «uhyggeleg» er ord som har endra tyding ganske dramatisk gjennom tida. «Gotisk» refererte opphavleg til gotarane og deira språk. Sidan blei ordet brukt om den gyselege underhaldingslitteraturen som vaks fram i Europa på 1700-talet, for så til slutt å kjenneteikne eit mykje meir vidstrekt kulturfelt i våre dagar. Då det gotiske kom til Noreg, var det eit framandt element, noko eksotisk og, ja, uhyggeleg i til dømes forteljingane til Maurits C. Hansen. Det vart meir eller mindre skuva til sides under nasjonalromantikken og realismen, men som Sigmund Freud seier om det undertrykte, kjem også det gotiske alltid attende. I nyare tid har det gotiske blitt ekstremt populaert -alt frå TV-program om vampyrar til populaermusikk, samtidskunst og mørke krokar på Internett kryr av gotiske element.«Uhyggeleg», like eins med det tyske «unheimlich» og engelske «uncanny», har ein kompleks etymologi. Mens «unheimlich» opphavleg refererer til det heimlege kontra det ikkjeheimlege, og «uncanny» viser til noko som ligg bakom det som er mogleg å vite, har det norske ordet «uhyggeleg» sitt opphav i norr. «hyggja»; det som gir trøyst, lindrar, det ein har glede av. Den vide tydinga av omgrepa blir spegla i dei fem artiklane, og forskarnettverket gjer greie for kva dei legg i det gotiske og det uhyggelege i sin introduksjon til temanummeret.Desse artiklane har sitt opphav i ein konferanse om emnet som blei arrangert i Karlstad i 2014. Konferansespråket var engelsk, og derfor er også artiklane skrivne på engelsk. Det får konsekvensar for siteringspraksisen i artiklane. Som forskarar i nordisk litteratur er artikkelforfattarane sjølvsagt forplikta til å studere dei litteraere tekstane på originalspråket, men sidan engelskspråklege artiklar opnar for eit internasjonalt publikum, dvs. for lesarar utan større kjennskap til skandinaviske språk, er alle sitat frå dei litteraere tekstane omsett til engelsk. Ettersom originalkjeldene går fram av artikkelmaterialet og enkelt kan leitast fram av den interesserte lesar, har vi ikkje funne det naudsynt å dublere alle sitat, ein praksis som ville ta mykje plass og er tidkrevjande å lese. Originalsitata er inkludert i fotnotar i dei tilfella der saerskilte ord og omgrep er emne for utførleg diskusjon.
