Recently the Cognitive Radio (CR), in particular the CR Ad-Hoc Network (CRAHN) technology appears as a burgeoning area in wireless communication that enables utilization of limited network resources in more efficient and intelligent way; studies indicate that opportunistic utilization of the available radio frequency spectrum, without interfering the licensed primary user (PU) could be made. The results of some experimental investigations on electromagnetically coupled microstrip antennas on two‐layer substrates are reported in this article. The variation of input impedance of electromagnetically coupled square and circular microstrip patches, with the degree of overlapping between the patch and feedline, is studied. Also presented is the percentage shift of resonance frequency due to the change of this overlapping. A method of increasing the 1:2 V.S.W.R. bandwidth of the patch antenna is also indicated.
