Pada 15 Juli 2016 terjadi Kudeta Militer terhadap pemerintahan sipil yang dipimpin oleh Presiden Recep Tayyip Erdogan. Walaupun kudeta gagal, bukan suatu keuntungan bagi Turki, yang mana pemerintah berupaya meningkatkan kestabilan politik, ekonomi dan sosial di Turki. Ketika peristiwa kudeta berhasil, kurang lebih pilihannya adalah pemerintahan baru atau sebagian baru, atau menggantikan struktur kekuasaan sebelumnya. Yang menjadi pertanyaan adalah faktor apa melatarbelakangi peristiwa kudeta. Untuk menjawab pertanyaan tersebut, tulisan ini menggunakan Teori sebab-sebab kudeta yang dirumuskan Moore (1999) yakni Sebab Kudeta Akut dan Kronik dengan sejumlah aspek dan variabel yang terkait dengan kondisi sosial dan politik Turki sebelum kudeta terjadi. Mulai dari krisis sosial, politik, konflik hingga menelaah karakteristik Angkatan Bersenjata Turki (Turk Silahli Kuvvetler/TSK) serta sejarah kudeta di Turki sebelumnya dengan menggunakan metode analisis deskriptif. Hasil analisis ini menyimpulkan bahwa faktor yang menjadi latarbelakang kudeta militer Turki 2016 : pertama, Faktor Krisis Sosial-Politik Domestik yang meliputi gelombang demonstrasi The Gezi Park Protester Maret-Agustus 2013, konflik antara pemerintah Turki dengan suku Kurdi yang memuncak pada tahun 2015 hingga Juli 2016, dan konflik antara dua kelompok besar antara AKP-Erdogan (Presiden Turki sekarang) dan Gulenist yang dipimpin oleh Fetullah Gulen. Kedua, faktor historis yaitu pengaruh dari peristiwa kudeta yang telah dialami sebelumnya.
