Cartea lui Nicolae Iorga, Sate și Preoți din Ardeal, publicată în 1902, reflectă interesul acestuia pentru Transilvania și locuitorii ei. În momentul apariției, ea venea în continuarea tentativelor de a publica documente privitoare la românii din Transilvania, eforturi intensificate în perioada 1900-1916, și concentra atenția istoricilor asupra preoților și învățătorilor din aceste sate, cărora autorul le dedica cartea 1 . O imagine mai vie a satelor transilvănene este oferită însă de Neamul românesc din Ardeal și Țara Ungurească, publicată în 1906, după ce istoricul călătorise efectiv în Transilvania, familiarizându-se cu realitățile locului 2 . În prima carte, atenția lui Iorga s-a îndreptat în mod special asupra istoriei preoților și a învățătorilor care au lăsat mărturii scrise ale activității lor. Iorga intuia, așa cum sugerează afirmația lui, că "o istorie de sate și de preoți e istoria Ardealului românesc" 3 , subliniind astfel rolul clerului în comunitățile românești ale Transilvaniei, mai ales din perspectiva modelării destinului lor.
